Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Guidance
- Plan and conduct structured group lessons to deliver district guidance curriculum effectively and in accordance with student’s developmental needs
- Collaborate with teachers who teach guidance-related curriculum
- Use accepted theories and effective techniques of developmental guidance to counsel individual students, small groups of students, and parents to plan, monitor, and manage a student’s own personal and social development
- Provide preventive, remedial, and crisis counseling as needed
- Serve as an impartial, non-reporting resource for interpersonal conflicts and discourse involving two or more students, including accusations of bullying
Consultation
- Work collaboratively to advocate for individual students and specific groups of students
Assessment
- Interpret standardized test results and assessment data to guide students in individual goal setting and planning
- Program management and administration
- Plan, implement, evaluate, and promote continuous improvement of a balanced comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling program that includes guidance curriculum, responsive services, individual planning, and system support components
- Advocate for a school environment that acknowledges and respects diversity
- Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents
- Comply with all district and campus/divisional routines and regulations
- Adhere to legal, ethical, and professional standards for school counselors including current professional standards of competence and practice
Other
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures
- Serve as member of the administrative leadership team and assist in supporting all students and staff
- Counsel students individually and in groups
- Counsel parents/guardians and teachers
- Motivate students to achieve excellence in all areas
- Assist in chapel responsibilities and other administrative tasks
- Assist in school-wide program promoting sexual abstinence/issues and drug awareness
- Promote cross cultural understanding as reflected in PCAs diversity policy
- Assist administration in addressing such school-related concerns as tardiness, absences, school-avoidance, and more
- Implement programs that address grief/loss, relationship concerns, family concerns, coping with stress, weight disorders, bullying, etc.
- Assist students in learning goal setting, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Coordinate and administer the testing program at the Lower School
- Work with staff, students, and parents to plan, implement, evaluate, and promote continuous improvement of a developmental guidance and counseling program
- Manage program resources, including counseling budget
- Assist in providing staff development for teachers relating to student guidance and CPS reporting
- Assist in providing parent training when needed
- Perform other duties as assigned by administration
Qualifications/Skills:
- Must have a master’s degree in guidance and counseling
- Must maintain certification as required by state law and/or accrediting agency
- Minimum of 5 years of teaching experience
- Prior experience in counseling position preferred
- Licensed Professional Counselor preferred
- Prestonwood Baptist Church member preferred
Physical, Mental Requirements and Work Environment:
- Regularly standing and walking around the campuses
- Regularly sitting at a computer requiring repetitive finger motion and manual dexterity
- Ability to communicate effectively and maintain emotional control, even in stressful situations
- Periodically required to bend, reach, push and pull objects for various reasons
- Occasional lifting of 10-20 pounds
- Subject to frequent interruptions
- May work prolonged or irregular hours
