Job Summary

The Low Voltage Electrician assigned to the Utilities Shop within the Energy, Utilities & Sustainability unit of Facilities Development & Operations and under general supervision provides a full range of skilled journey- level electrical work including the installation, maintenance, modification, troubleshooting and repair of electrical apparatuses, equipment and systems. The incumbent, assigned to the Utilities Shop, is responsible for a full range of journey-level skilled work in fire alarm, sub-metering and access systems, (i.e. keyless entry, intrusion/panic alarms) to ensure a clean, safe, attractive and well-maintained campus environment.

The Energy & Utilities unit of Facilities Development & Operations provides energy and utilities services to the University campus spread across multiple sites comprised of +150 acres, 81 buildings, and more than six million gross square feet. Primary responsibilities are associated with operation of the Main Campus and its central energy plant and utility infrastructure. The Main Campus utility infrastructure consists of a 5.5MW natural gas fired co-generation plant with large capacity chillers, thermal energy storage system, auxiliary boilers, high voltage substation and medium voltage switchgear and electrical distribution infrastructure at 33 building substations. Utilities infrastructure includes steam, condensate and distributed chilled water pumping systems, up to the interface to the connections in the campus buildings. The unit is responsible for the fire/life safety and security systems for the Main Campus and all other off campus sites. The Energy & Utilities unit employs approximately 18 full time permanent staff.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Operational needs vary daily and are based on priorities set by the appropriate administrator
  •  Reviews work order system to understand and complete assigned preventative, deferred, and reactive maintenance work efforts in a manner aligned with the priorities communicated by the appropriate administrator
  • Performs as a journey-level electrician in association with basic and advanced maintenance and repair work typical to the field
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment
  • Performs as a journey-level Low Voltage Electrician in the recommendation and selection of materials related to maintenance and repair projects
  • Reads, interprets, and works from plans, drawings, and specifications
  • Ensures all work efforts are properly and accurately tracked in the computerized maintenance management systems including technician notes, labor and material resources utilized, schedule, and other documentation required to substantiate the work effort
  • Assists with campus emergency response efforts in the area of assignment including work performed after hours or on weekends

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to organize assigned work and carry forward assignments based on operational priorities as defined by the appropriate administrator and/or operating guidelines with a focus on efficiently performing duties required to complete assignments successfully and within given deadlines
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work harmoniously with a diverse group of individuals throughout the organization as well as those outside of the organization who are directly or indirectly involved with projects and/or assignments
  •  Ability to operate a motor vehicle, utility cart, scissor lift, boom lift, and forklift (as certified) and other equipment and tools required to successfully complete assignments
  • Developed computer and technology skills including use of software common to business and organizational management including email, word processing, spreadsheets, scheduling
  • Must be able to work evening, weekend, or holiday hours when requested to attend to campus business needs or respond to emergencies

 

Required Qualifications

  • Any combination of progressively responsible experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard 8000 hour (4 year) electrician's apprenticeship program
  • Requires the possession of a valid California Driver's License for the operation of any vehicle or equipment required for position and in any emergency. Must participate in all OSHA required physicals and examinations

 

License

A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education equivalent to that achieved within the electrical trade that would lead one toward achieving journey level status in  or any equivalent combination of training and experience which demonstrates the achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of an applicable apprenticeship program
  • Preferred possession of CA Department of Industrial Relations Fire Alarm Technician Certification
  • Preferred NICETT I minimum certification
  • Preferred NICETT II minimum certification.
  • Preferred factory training on Simplex and/or Siemens Fire Alarm Systems, S2 Access Control Systems, and intrusion detection and access control systems with free-standing multi zone DACT dialers
  • Weekly Fire pump test certificate from Office of State Fire Marshal
  • Experience with server-based account management and control systems such as SIS Alarm Center, S2 Enterprise Systems, Genetec VMS system or similar

 

Compensation

Classification: Electrician
Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,151/month - $6,391/month
CSU Salary Range: $6,151/month - $7,942/month
