Long Term Substitute: Middle School Design and Woodworking Teacher
Start Date: January 18, 2024 - June 3, 2024
Gilman School seeks a dynamic educator to substitute for a teacher taking a spring sabbatical. This position involves teaching two sections of Middle School Design and Woodworking and includes performing other duties such as advisor, proctor (e.g. study hall, recess, etc.), and attending community events, such as assembly.
This is a unique opportunity for a collaborative and forward-thinking teacher to build upon the School’s strong tradition of fabricating projects with wood and metal with the possibility of exploring ways to incorporate the arts, technology, and other STEM-related programs into the curriculum. The ideal candidate will have prior success with woodworking, and if not experienced in STEM programs and curriculum design, a vested interest in exploring these opportunities. With the future direction of the overall PK-12 design & woodworking program involving more cross-disciplinary efforts, this person will work with a team of educators on school-wide programming while developing and articulating a vision for a future design center.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Teach Middle School Design and Woodworking for grades 6-8.
Act as an advisor and a homeroom teacher.
Fulfill assigned duties, such as recess duty or study hall proctoring, as needed.
Work collaboratively on grades 6-8 woodworking program that is cross-disciplinary and supports the teaching of Gilman Skills.
In coordination with the Design & Woodworking Shop manager, oversee the daily operation of the Middle School Design & Woodworking Shop, including academic and co-curricular programming, scheduling, inventory, maintenance, and repairs.
Ensuring the safety of all students, faculty, and staff in this space.
Involving her/himself in the overall life of the School.
Build healthy relationships with students and faculty.
Communicate with parents of students and advisees through written and/or oral reports at designated times throughout the year.
Teach with an aim to make the Gilman community true to its mission.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO SUCCEED:
Significant experience in and passion for woodworking.
Competence in teaching woodworking to students in grades 6-8.
Advancing the community’s efforts to be diverse, inclusive, and equitable
Interest in and enthusiasm for boys’ education.
Ability to work closely, responsively, and collaboratively with others.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Strong organizational skills.
