Position Information Description & Details: North Dakota State University (NDSU) Extension is recruiting a highly motivated educator to serve as an Extension Livestock Management Specialist for North Dakota. The Livestock Management specialist will focus primarily on beef cattle management and production but will support other livestock systems. Extension programming may include, but is not limited to: ruminant nutrition, economics, reproduction, genetics, and animal health, as the expertise relates to experience and personnel talents.

The Extension specialist is a member of a statewide Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources team responsible for providing leadership to create and deliver innovative learning experiences that empower North Dakotans to improve their lives and communities. This position is a 12-month, permanent, non-tenure track position, but includes opportunities for promotion.

The appointment is 90% extension, 10% applied research relative to their Extension program. This position will be based at the NDSU North Central Research Extension Center (NCREC) located near Minot, ND. The NCREC Director will provide supervision for this position.

More information about the area is available at: https://www.minotnd.gov/ https://www.ndtourism.com/cities/minot This position includes, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities: Develop an innovative Extension program that includes the identification, assessment, and delivery of educational programs that will facilitate the management of livestock production systems, primarily in beef cattle, with target audiences of Extension agents, ranchers, landowners, and government entities. Stay up to date to address current needs regarding fundamental management practices, such as nutrition, economics, reproduction, genetics, and animal health for livestock operations in ND. Provide a systems-based approach for education, inclusive of Extension programming focused on economic impacts of management decisions on farm/ranch operations.

Communicate with producers, Extension personnel, appropriate Research Extension Center personnel, and NDSU Department of Animal Sciences about issues that need new or additional research to deliver statewide livestock related programs. Develop relationships, cooperate, and collaborate with state/regional Extension specialists, county agents, and NCREC personnel to deliver programming. When appropriate, provide leadership for the development and demonstration of novel management strategies such as, the integration of crop and livestock production that ensure program relevancy and the ability to guide producer efforts to adapt to changing production systems.

Develop individual and team-based Extension programs and publications that utilize expertise and continuing education to disseminate information and build knowledge for producers, industry personnel, and Extension personnel statewide. Secure extramural funding to support livestock Extension programming efforts. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Master of Science in animal science, agricultural economics, or closely related discipline. Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver hands-on education to Extension agents and producers. Working knowledge of production systems in North Dakota.

Familiarity with Northern Plains agriculture. Proficiency in various computer programs for use in developing and delivering educational programs. Knowledge of current and emerging livestock issues.

Ability to define, conduct, and interpret applied research and demonstration projects. Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Demonstrated effectiveness in working with varied audiences, including individuals and groups, as a team member.

Academic training in livestock economics, ruminant nutrition, reproduction, genetics, animal health and/or nutrition. Proficiency in computer applications for delivering educational programs. Valid U.S.

driver's license or the ability to obtain one. Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. in animal science, D.V.M., or closely related field.

Coursework in farm and ranch management, agricultural marketing, finance, policy, and risk management. Working knowledge and experience with ruminant livestock production in the northern Great Plains. Experience working with Extension and/or the land-grant university system.

Demonstrated skills in internet-based education and communication, and other electronic usage. Successful publication of Extension and/or research results in the popular press and professional journals. Demonstrated ability to secure external funds.
