Job description

Berman & Simmons is seeking a Litigation Paralegal (entry level) to join our personal injury group.
The Litigation Paralegal plays a pivotal role in overseeing civil litigation cases, guiding them through every stage from intake to jury verdict. The selected candidate will train and work with several teams throughout the firm to gain a thorough understanding of the lifecycle of a civil litigation case.

Along with experience, applicants should have excellent academic credentials and strong research and writing skills.
Candidates who have experience working with trauma survivors, survivors of sexual abuse, domestic violence, or other traumas, and who are trauma-informed, are highly encouraged to apply. Experience from backgrounds including social service agencies with case management, nurse case managers, or law enforcement investigation would be helpful in this specialized position.
Primary responsibilities include:

  • Meeting with attorneys, clients, and other professionals to discuss assigned cases or projects.
  • Drafting legal documents including routine pleadings and motions, affidavits, and interrogatories; files motions and pleadings according to judicial procedures.
  • Researching and analyzing statutes, regulations, legal articles, judicial decisions, and other legal sources; providing written analysis to attorneys.
  • Interviewing clients and witnesses and preparing summaries of their statements.
  • Preparing, organizing, storing, and retrieving case files, which may include evidence, exhibits, depositions, pleadings, exhibits, and other items.
  • Assisting attorneys with trial preparation, which may include attending trials and hearings.

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Understanding of legal language and principles, research methods, court pleadings and processes, and other related matters.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, and to exercise discretion and good judgment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Job details:
  • Schedule: Full-time, Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
  • Location: Lewiston, Maine. Primarily office based. Possible work from home 1-2 days per week after training is complete.
  • Pay: $25.00 / hour
