Job description

The OST Literacy and reading tutor provides 1:1 or small group literacy tutoring for youth 5-8 years old. The tutor will assess reading skills of students, provide evidenced based tutoring to meet specific needs of youth and reassess growth on a monthly basis. They will assist with building social-emotional skills and effectively manage any potential risky behaviors in a swift and restorative manner.
Major Responsibilities and Key Tasks
Reading Tutor (afternoons and summer)
  • Provide 1:1 or group tutoring for youth
  • Design engaging and structured 2:1 after-school reading interventions for kindergarten through second grade students that include explicit phonemic awareness and phonics instruction and use of decodable connected texts.
  • Track intervention minutes after each session
  • Build strong relationships with the students, teachers and school staff using the tenets of positive youth development.
  • Assess and record student reading levels on a monthly basis using the DIBELS
  • Maintain program records for your group, including, but not limited to, group attendance, accident reports, and anecdotal notes
  • Maintain safety and create a welcoming environment for all youth and families using group- established norms and expectations.
  • Communicate successes and incidents with OST mentors and management
  • Maintain systems to recognize positive behaviors and build social emotional skills in all youth
  • Maintain overall professional personal appearance adhering to the guidelines of CRCL
  • Demonstrate respect, understanding and patience to all youth and adults from all cultural backgrounds, with an appreciation for their interests, creativity, capabilities, beauty, and means of expression.
  • Follow all confidentiality rules of the agency
  • Must be able to resolve problems, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure.

Required Education and Experience
Applicant for the position of OST Literacy and reading tutor must possess one of the following:
  • Very knowledgeable of the latest reading science
  • Experience building relationships with students
  • Post-secondary elementary courses completed preferred.
  • Consistent track record for being reliable and on time
Must be able to pass Background Check
