Position Summary
Under the general direction of the Language Services Manager, performs interpreting/translation services of oral and/or written communications between English and a designated second language or languages (Spanish) in a variety of settings, and performs other related duties as assigned.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Translates written materials from English into a second language (Spanish) and vice-versa while using the three modes of interpretation as needed (Simultaneous/Consecutive/Sight) remotely or in person.
  • Follows and abides by the Code of Ethics for Translators and for Interpreters and follows processes in place for Translation and Interpretation Services.
  • Reads written materials, such as legal documents, Human Resource (HR) and marketing messages, news reports, educational materials, course materials for bilingual courses, and translate materials into specified language.
  • Compiles terminology and information to be used in translations, including technical terms such as those for legal or higher education material.
  • Checks translations of technical terms and terminology to ensure that they are accurate and remain consistent throughout translation revisions while compiling information on content and context of information to be translated and on intended audience.
  • Refers to reference materials such as dictionaries, lexicons, encyclopedias, and computerized terminology banks as needed to ensure translation and accuracy.
  • Proofreads, edits, and revises translated materials and reviews translated material for accuracy of meaning, grammar, and syntax.
  • Checks original texts or confers with authors to ensure that translations retain the content, meaning, and feeling of the original material.
  • Adapts translations into the style that is appropriate for the intended audience (i.e. students, Spanish-speakers in the community, employees, etc.).
  • Revises existing Spanish glossary resources, create new glossaries as needed in Excel spreadsheets and maintain them and store them in shared platform.
  • Answers inquiries from employees, students, and community members, and interpret and explain words and phrases for meaning and appropriateness.
  • Participates in special events, program activities, and related workshops as needed.
  • Identify and resolve conflicts related to the meanings of words, concepts, practices, or behaviors.
  • Usage of remote platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google, etc. for interpretation services and interacts with databases and platforms used by the college and the Language Services unit.
  • Communication with vendors including contractors (translators/interpreters) through email or phone or in person as needed.
  • Perform data entry tasks.
  • Establishes and maintains record keeping system for work performed and performs data entry tasks.
  • Performs other related duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate Degree, State or National Translation Certification or 30+ hours of college level Spanish coursework. 2 years of experience interpreting/translating English and a designated second language.
  • Must be Bilingual in English and Secondary Language (Spanish).
