Position Summary
JOB SUMMARY
The lifeguard is responsible for the safety and well being of patrons while visiting Lancaster County Swimming Pool. This professional position requires a strong swimming ability, superb rescue skills and consistent enforcement of facility rules and regulations.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Monitors patrons in the swimming pool and on the pool deck
- Performs rescues as needed using American Red Cross rescue methods
- Provides first aid to patrons as needed according to American Red Cross standards of care
- Provides CPR and Rescue Breathing as needed according to American Red Cross standards of care
- Has a working and functional knowledge of all safety, rescue and first aid equipment and the location of each item
- Enforces facility rules and regulations
- Exercises mature judgement at all times
OTHER SPECIFIC TASKS OR DUTIES
- Completes daily safety checklists and reports
- Instructs group and private Learn to Swim lessons
- Attends weekly in-service trainings
- Assists with keeping the facility clean
- Mantains rescue, safety and first aid equipment
- Regularly works weekends and holidays
- Assists with planning and implementing special events
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be at least 15 years of age.
- Must provide current Lifeguard Certification as required in the PA Bathing Code
- Must be a strong swimmer with the ability to perform the American Red Cross Lifeguard swim test
- Must have PA State Police Background check, PA Chld Abuse History Clearance and FBI Fingerprint Background check
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen
- WSI Certification is preferred but not required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Maintain excellent physical fitness with the ability to complete the American Red Cross Lifeguard swim test
- Thorough knowledge of American Red Cross rescue methods and "assist" techniques
- Thorough knowledge of American Red Cross First Aid procedures and standards of care
- Thorough knowledge of American Red Cross CPR/AED techniques and standards of care
- Ability to maintain focus and alertness while on duty
- Ability to exercise discipline and initiative in planning, organizing and implementing assigned work.
- Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing, and to speak before large groups
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Maintain excellent physical fitness with the ability to complete the American Red Cross Lifeguard swim test
- Climbingsteps to elevated lifeguard chairs
- Lifting equipment to waist up to 40 lbs
- Visual definition to identify distressed swimmers
- Ability to hear questions at a conversational tone
- Ability to stand and walk up to 3 hours continuously
- Ability to speak clearly and loudly enough to be heard by large groups
- This position has been identified as having the potential for exposure to Hepatitis B as the incumbent has a "duty to respond" and render first aid
