TITLE: Summer Camp Lifeguard / Camp Counselor - (Seasonal - Residential)
Reports to: Summer Camp Director
Classification/FLSA Status: Exempt, Seasonal

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Summer Camp Lifeguard / Camp Counselor will lead provide aquatic program to campers in a safe, supportive and fun as well as assist in the operation of the camp unit and its programs to reflect the goals of the Girl Scout organization. This is an 8-week residential position that will run June 16 - July 26 and includes room and meals for the duration of the summer sessions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Lifeguard:
Develop and carry out, with the waterfront staff, waterfront activities based on unit plans; coordinate requests for use of facilities.
Supervise aquatic staff; evaluate staff at mid-season and end-of-season; develop weekly lifeguard schedule; evaluate skills of waterfront staff and develop in-service trainings.
Administer the testing and classification of campers swimming and watercraft abilities.
Orient staff to waterfront procedures during pre-camp.
Teach water safety, swimming, boating, kayaking, canoeing, and sailing.
Develop and enforce waterfront safety measures for every person in camp (including staff, campers, and visitors) in line with Girl Scout and ACA standards; report accidents to the Health Supervisor or Camp Director promptly.
Responsible for care and use of boats, canoes, lifesaving equipment, and other equipment and supplies; requisition necessary equipment and supplies before and during camp; request necessary repairs or maintenance work.
Plan and conduct special waterfront events.
Conduct initial and end-of-season inventory and equipment safety check; store equipment and make suggestions for equipment purchases for following season.
Conduct daily check of area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
Work with Program Director and support team planning of camp wide programs.
Submit all reports, course rosters, etc., for swimming and small craft courses.
Camp Counselor:
Work with Unit Leader and/or administrative staff to formulate and implement activities and experiences in the unit through girl planning, the session theme, and the Girl Scout program emphasis.
Know the girls in the unit and help them to respect the rights of others and understand the differences and similarities of other campers.
Supervise campers and ensure their physical and emotional health and safety at all times.
Assist in maintaining unit sanitation, housekeeping, and care of supplies and equipment.
Assist with the storing and packing of equipment for safety during and at the end of the season.
Keep Unit Leader informed of day-to-day unit successes and concerns, as well as camper health and other unit issues.
Maintain a good rapport with parents and the community.
Keep required records and reports as requested by Unit Leader and/or administrative staff.
Assist with check-in and check-out procedures.
Assist with the opening and closing of the entire camp.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Required Skills/Abilities:

Current Lifeguard, waterfront lifeguard, and CPR professional rescuer certifications from the American Red Cross or comparable certificate from the YMCA or other certifying organization.
Be a currently registered member of Girl Scouts of the USA or willing to become a member.
Be at least 18 years of age.
Be willing to live in a staff tent or cabin near campers.
Have training and/or experience working with children in an outdoor setting.
Have good time management, organization and communication skills.
Hold current certification in standard First Aid and CPR.
Ability to clear a Florida Department of Law Enforcement Level 2 fingerprint / background screening and drug screening.
Believe in the mission of the Girl Scout movement.
Good character, integrity, adaptability, patience, sense of humor, and enthusiasm.
Ability to accept guidance and supervision and relate to ones peer group.
Ability to keep accurate and detailed records.
Knowledge of Girl Scout philosophy, standards, program, and systems.
Experience and demonstrated sensitivity in working with people from various ethnic, religious, and economic backgrounds.
Excellent communications skills; excellent facilitation, conflict resolution, and presentation skills.
Ability to remain calm and polite in stressful situations.
Must be driven, self-motivated, and a strong leader to inspire staff and girls.
Strong interest in working with youth and teens.
Physical Requirements:

Daily exposure to seasonal weather conditions. Outdoor exposure includes elements of nature to include shrubbery, vegetation (poison ivy), hills, rocky walk areas, etc. as well as bugs, wild animals and reptiles.
Sufficient visual acuity to make appropriate judgments regarding Girl Scout materials.
Physical ability to frequently stop, kneel, bend, crouch, reach overhead, grasp, push, pull, lift, and move objects up to 50 pounds at shoulder height, and occasionally lift in excess of 50 pounds.
Demonstrated normal depth perception.
See and read printed materials, with or without visual aids; distinguish colors; read and understand rules and policies, labels and instructions.
Verbal communication including the ability to speak and hear at normal room levels.
Other demands, as determined by the employer.
