Life Underwriter 1

The Underwriter I is responsible for the underwriting review of life insurance applications. This position will develop and implement an underwriting framework to meet the desired risk thresholds. The Underwriter I is the primary contact with underwriting vendors supplying prescription and medical data. This position is responsible for reviewing underwriting appeals, as well as life insurance claims and chronic and terminal illness rider claims.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provides underwriting review and support for all life insurance applications. Has the final decision-making authority on approval or denial of an application. Supports the sales and administration areas by answering questions about the underwriting process. Provides pre-sales underwriting review of cases upon request. Reviews life insurance applications for insurable interest.
• Responsible for all review and decision making of underwriting appeals. Provides feedback on declines. Responsible for reviewing all life insurance claims. Reviews terminal illness and chronic illness rider claims for both life and annuities.
• Manages the underwriting vendor relationship(s). Supports the development of the underwriting process. Supports ongoing review of the prescription and medical data leading towards an accept or reject decision.
• Supports audits conducted by underwriting vendor.
• Supports the Product Management team and/or other departments on an as-needed basis.
• Willingly takes on additional responsibilities as requested in order to accomplish department and Company objectives.
• Actively participates and contributes to the goals and objectives of the Company by working collaboratively and fostering a positive and inclusive work environment.

• Effective communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written. Ability to articulate the rationale for underwriting decisions.
• Excellent mathematical, analytical, organizational and problem solving skills and attention to detail.
• Strong decision-making skills, must have confidence in own abilities and be able to make decisions in a timely manner.
• Ability to prioritize workflows, establish and meet deadlines and manage multiple concurrent tasks.

Training or Work Experience:

• Minimum 1 year of experience in life insurance underwriting required.

Education:

• Bachelor's Degree required.
• Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration or Insurance preferred.

Working Conditions:

• On-Site Location: West Des Moines, Iowa.
• Business Travel: Infrequent travel (less than 5% of the time).
