SUMMARY: To assist the teacher in general daily classroom activities, with emphasis on instructional support.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Specific tasks and/or activities under each of the following responsibilities will be assigned by the Supervisor
- Assist assigned teacher with the implementation of lesson plans
- Administer various tests as directed
- Prepare documentation as required
- Tutor individual or small groups of students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher
- Monitor and oversee student drills, practice, and assignments in various subjects
- Confer with the teacher concerning lesson plans and materials to meet student needs
- Attend classes with students to provide instructional supports
- Assist the classroom teacher in arranging the learning environment
- Under the supervision of a certificated teacher, prepare for classroom activities
- Assist students in completing classroom assignments, homework, and projects
- Assure students' understanding of classroom rules and procedures and assist students by answering questions, providing proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude, and general guidance
- Assist the certificated teacher with the supervision of students during non-instructional times, such as emergency drills, assemblies, cafeteria, restrooms, field trips, hallways, playground, and bus loading/unloading activities
- Assure the health and safety of students by following established practices and procedures and maintain the learning environment in a safe, orderly, and clean manner
- Observe and control the behavior of students in the classroom according to approved procedures, monitor students during outdoor activities as directed
- Become familiar with student IEP and 504 plans, and report progress regarding student performance and behavior to supervising teacher
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or equivalent, 2 years of post-secondary education preferred
- Experience working with children
POSITION SPECIFICATIONS: This job operates in a typical classroom environment. While performing the duties of this job, the position may require physical demands that could include physical restraint, ambulation,
and position of student, moving student in and out of the wheelchair, and assistance with daily activities. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.
Physical Demands: Must have the ability to:
- Often required to sit, stand, walk, stoop, and kneel while performing the above duties
- Ability to reach above and below the waist
- Ability to use both hands in repetitive motion
- Considerable bending and twisting of the body are required
- Ability to lift and/or assist in lifting student(s) and their assistive equipment/devices up to 50 lbs
- 8:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. (NOTE: 6 Hours per day)
