Job Summary:

Under direct supervision of a registered nurse, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or physician and the general supervision of the Executive Director, the Licensed Vocational Nurse I performs a wide range of technical, skilled, and paraprofessional nursing duties and patient care activities within their scope of practice.

Major duties and responsibilities:

Clinical

  • Room patients, interview, obtain pertinent patient symptoms and brief medical history
  • Take temperature, pulse, blood pressure, height, weight and other vital signs and make appropriate entries into electronic medical records system
  • Prepare patient for examination by a clinical and assist in the examination when appropriate
  • Follow-up on treatments as requested and interpret or explain treatments to patient
  • Apply heat or cold modalities, instruct patient in use of physical therapy appliances (crutches, canes, etc.)
  • Performs vision and hearing screening tests
  • Performs electrocardiogram, ear irrigation and similar treatments
  • Performs basic CLIA-waived testing including obtaining specimens
  • Assists in preparation of slides and cultures
  • Prepares requisitions for laboratory and x-ray work as ordered by a medical provider
  • Assist in the delivery of medication abortion services Patient Education Provides ongoing Health Education in all aspects of Ambulatory Family Practice, such as explaining self-care treatment to patients
  • Provides sexual health education, counseling and care, including administration of medication abortion services, including but not limited to, assisting with Reproductive Health/contraceptive control clinics and/or classes

Immunizations/Injections/Medications

  • Administers medications by mouth or hypodermic injection as ordered by a clinician
  • Assists in administration of immunizations and skin tests (e.g., Tuberculosis screenings)

Phlebotomy

  • Perform phlebotomy as back up to department phlebotomist

 

Special Projects/Assignments

Equipment Coordinator

  • Intakes new equipment and performs quality control checks
  • Trains and provides in-service to nursing staff/providers on all new equipment
  • Assists in appropriation and annual planning for major medical equipment and supplies
  • Performing regular checks of refrigeration equipment to ensure it is operating at required temperatures for storage of medications and specimens
  • Assists in creating an inventory/ordering system for medical and office supplies; maintains inventory

Disaster preparedness

  • Assists in disaster preparedness
  • Monitors and maintains disaster supply inventory

Facility

  • Sets up treatment trays
  • Sterilizes and maintain instrument trays and/or surgical equipment
  • Conducts quality control procedures on certain equipment
  • Cleans and stocks exam and treatment rooms with appropriate supplies
  • Notifies nursing supervisor of stock depletion or expiration
  • Assists in maintaining medical records as necessary
  • Assists with communication of facility of needs (e.g., work requests)
  • Maintain key cupboard

Other

  • Assists front office staff with patient intake and/or screens patients for appointment needs (phone, virtual and drop-ins)
  • Serves on relevant committees; engages in professional development activities, performs other duties as assigned; completes all department and university required trainings as assigned

 

Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of a state approved vocational nursing program in an accredited school of vocational nursing or equivalent training and experience as defined by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT).
  • Possess and maintain a valid Vocational Nurse license issued by the State of California; and
  • Possess a valid CPR/AID certification.
  • Valid CA Driver's License.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of nursing care principles and practices pertaining to the scope of practice; anatomy and physiology applicable to assigned duties; basic medications and their effects, as well as potential complications; application and proper use of various medical supplies and equipment used in performing assigned nursing duties; and aseptic techniques and requirements. Working knowledge of California laws and regulations pertaining to LVNs and their scope of practice.
  • Ability to perform assigned nursing duties and demonstrate appropriate nursing practices; demonstrate proper techniques and skills, competency in performing assigned nursing duties and patient care activities described above; learn related clinic procedures and handle equipment required for patient care in a Student Health Center; understand basic medical terminology; make accurate observations and accurately document a patient's subject complaint in medical records; exercise correct judgment within the areas of assigned responsibility; follow detailed oral and written instructions; and use applicable Health Center automated systems as needed to perform duties.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience and ability to work with patients from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience working with college students, preferably in a college setting.
  • Experience giving immunizations and other injections.

 

Compensation and Benefits:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,338 - $4,333 per month

Classification Salary Range: $3,338 - $6,003 per month

The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Position Information:

Work status: Full-time/Non-exempt/Probationary

Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am - 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.

Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.

Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.  CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

 

Drivers License Check

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required.  Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
