Job Objective:
The Licensed Vocational Nurse provides general nursing care, administers medications and performs treatments to patients within a nursing unit guided by the policies and procedures of the hospital under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
Essential Duties:
Nursing Process
- Assists Registered Nurse in implementing nursing process in direct patient care
- Provides accurate observations of patients' physiological, psycho social and spiritual needs, and reports problems, complications or abnormalities to the Registered Nurse and/or Physician
- Provides patient care based on the assessment and Care plan
- Contributes to patient care based on the assessment and care plan
- Participates in patient/family education as appropriate. Provides information to patient/family relating to educational resources available. Directs patient/family educational process
- Adheres to policies and procedures in providing care including but not limited to the following:
- Medication Administration
- Intravenous Therapy
- Treatment Modalities
- Blood Administration
- Emergency Care
- Evaluates and documents observations and care provided In the patient's medical record
- Incorporates time management skills in accomplishing care
Nursing Care Delivery Process
- Knowledgeable regarding current nursing practices and procedures
- Demonstrates knowledge and use of written resources and forms
- Demonstrates knowledge of administrative resources and chain of command.
- Knowledge of legal aspects of nursing care
- Demonstrates knowledge of legal documents pertinent to area of care
- Demonstrates knowledge of Patient/Resident Rights
- Demonstrates knowledge of Medication Pass as required by HCFA as pertinent to area of care
Technical Equipment
- Operates technical equipment required in area of assignment, safely, efficiently and accurately
Environment
- Assists with maintenance of safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment
- Assesses safety/cleanliness of patient/unit environment and reports conditions requiring change
- Utilizes resources, equipment, and supplies efficiently and with cost awareness
- Reports hazardous conditions to appropriate department for correction
- Uses aseptic techniques for protection of patients and personal safety
- Prevents contamination and/or transfer of infection by use of the Exposure Control Plan and Standard Precautions in daily work
- Demonstrates knowledge of emergency codes
- Restocks patient care areas.

- Provides appropriate care
- Assumes responsibility for quality of care given to assigned patients
- Gives accurate, concise patient care report to team leader, physician and other appropriate persons
- Maintains effective working relationships with fellow staff members, other departments, patients, and families of patients, physicians and volunteers

- Able to provide care as part of team effort in crisis or emergency situation
- Adheres to Performance Improvement process and participates in Performance Improvement activities
Education
- Adheres to required educational standards
- Maintains current licensure, certifications, education, and physical health standards
- Must complete 15 units of continuing education within a calendar year, 12 of these units must be in area of specialty
- Computer training
- Demonstrates knowledge and competency on hospital Information system
- Participates in educational activities
- Attends staff meetings regularly
- Successfully completes written and practical competencies
- Completes 30 hour IV therapy course within first year.

- Communicates effectively with patients, families, visitors, and physicians
- Responsible for problem solving and crisis intervention related to physicians, patients, families, and staff
- Displays a willingness to follow directions and to accept and utilize constructive criticism

- Must take and pass the hospital pharmacology exam prior to hire or promotion into this classification
- Ability to relieve clerical staff at desk, as needed

Required Licensure and/or Certifications:
- Licensed Vocational License for state of California
- Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification

- Accepts additional workload during times of unexpected circumstances, e.g., high activity, high census, and sudden emergencies
