PURPOSE
To establish a list of eligible candidates that will be used to fill future vacancies (part-time, permanent, long term and temporary assignments) for the duration of the list, up to a year.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications stated in the job posting by the application deadline in order to move forward in the testing process. Those applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will have their application materials reviewed by a screening committee that will evaluate the training and experience of each applicant as it relates to the areas assessed in the supplemental questions. Those with the highest scores on the T&E will be invited to the multiple choice exam. Those with the highest scores on the multiple choice exam will be invited to the structured interview. The testing process is subject to change as needs dictate. All communication regarding this process will be delivered via email.

Purpose Statement
The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) for Simi Valley Unified School District plays a vital role in providing specialized health services to students with physical health care needs. Under the general supervision of the Assistant Superintendent, Student Support Services, the LVN follows guidelines provided by the student's doctor and/or the school nurse to ensure the well-being and safety of students with health-related concerns. This position requires specialized training and licensure to perform non-routine and routine specialized basic health care procedures.
The LVN works in a variety of settings, including general and special needs educational programs for infants to age 22, ensuring that students' health needs are met effectively and professionally. The LVN collaborates closely with the school nurse, teachers, and principals, follows detailed instructions and established practices and procedures. The role requires sound judgment and initiative in providing specialized health support services.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Functions
  • Under the supervision of a credentialed school nurse provides specialized healthcare procedures:
    • Performs a wide range of specialized physical healthcare procedures, including catheterization, NG tube feeding, changing tracheotomy tubes and ties, proper use of a mechanical suctioning device, colostomy/ileostomy care, gastrostomy feeding, mechanical ventilation, nasal cannula application, oxygen supplementation, syringe suctioning, and other procedures as prescribed by physicians.
    • Provides comprehensive care to diabetic students, which includes blood glucose testing, blood glucose monitoring, carbohydrate counting, monitoring insulin pump settings, and insulin administration.
    • Administers prescribed medications according to physician's and parent's instructions, ensuring adherence to established District procedures and maintaining accurate records.
  • Responds to emergency medical situations:
    • Administers emergency medications including but not limited to Epi-pen, Diastat, Valtoco, Glucagon, and Baqsimi.
    • Responds to emergency medical situations, such as seizures and anaphylactic reactions, and administers First Aid and CPR as appropriate.
  • Supports students and provides supervision:
    • Ensures the safety and well-being of students with health-related concerns during school hours and activities.
    • Provides assistance with activities of daily living to students with personal needs, including toileting and/or diapering, cleaning, lifting, positioning, ambulation, and the care of devices such as feeding tubes, catheters, urinary and colostomy bags.
    • May ride a school bus to accompany and care for a student with specific healthcare or medical needs.
    • Assists with transferring students to and from classrooms and events, including those in wheelchairs.
    • May supervise students during playground and outdoor/campus activities.
    • Assists students with special needs in learning to use special equipment.
    • Promotes the development and maintenance of appropriate social behaviors.
    • Models gross motor skills and independent mobility.
    • Assists in instructional activities and supports the teacher in maintaining the health and safety of students.
  • Maintains accurate student health records, reports and First Aid Supplies:
    • Maintains accurate and up-to-date health records for students, including medical history, treatment logs, and incident reports.
    • Maintains an inventory of first aid supplies, distribute first aid kits, and requisition health office supplies as needed.
    • Assists in compiling data for State, County, and District reports related to site health issues.
    • Prepares and distributes various health-related reports, notices, and referrals while safeguarding student medical and health information.
  • Acts as role model and effectively communicate with parent and staff:
    • Display calmness and control when dealing with behavioral issues, serving as a positive role model.
    • Collaborates with other members of the instructional team to monitor student development and progress.
    • Regularly communicate with colleagues regarding students' daily performance.
    • Responds to inquiries from parents and staff by interpreting and explaining applicable laws, codes, rules, programs, and regulations
    • Attends meetings and conferences related to assigned activities to stay informed and collaborate effectively.

  • Other Functions
    • Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    Education and Experience
    Graduation from an accredited Vocational Nursing program. Experience in a public or private health setting as a Licensed Vocational Nurse is preferred
    Licenses and Certificates
    • California Board of Vocational Nursing Vocational Nurse License (LVN)
    • Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification issued by a recognized first-aid training program
    • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certification issued by a recognized first-aid training program
    • First Aid Certification issued by a recognized first-aid training program
    • Valid California driver's license

    Working Environment
    Work is generally performed indoors where some safety considerations exist due to physical labor and to the medical nature of the position (i.e. sharps). There is regular exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, and blood borne pathogens; however, the risk is minimal through personal protective equipment (ie.gloves).

    Salary: Five step salary range that provides annual increases of approximately five percent until the fifth step is reached. New hire initial step placement (normally up to Step 3) based on qualifying education and experience as outlined in Merit System Rule 7.20.1. An employee who is promoted to a higher class shall be placed on the step of the new salary range that is at least five percent above the current rate, excluding any differential pay.
    Vacation: Earned based on assigned hours. Increased vacation allowance based on years of service with the district. Confidential employees receive an additional 3 days vacation allotment, up to a maximum of 22 days. Management employees receive 22 days of vacation (based on 12-month assignment).
    Sick Leave: Earned at the rate of one day (based on the number of assigned hours) per month, and is accumulative from year to year.
    Holidays: Fourteen paid holidays per year (based on 12-month assignment).
    Insurance and Credit Union: The District offers a competitive Health and Welfare plan for employees and dependents, based upon the number of hours worked; employees who are placed in a regular assignment of 20 hours or more per week are eligible for benefits. The Ventura Schools Federal Credit Union offers a variety of services.
