GENERAL PURPOSE
Supervises Books by Mail staff in providing circulation & information services to Books by Mail library patrons.
 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the close supervision of the Library Director.
 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervises Books by Mail staff, schedules staff, performs Books by Mail staff annual evaluations, approves time off requests, assigns duties to Books by Mail staff, oversees customer service and counsels employees.
 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Must have strong customer service skills.
• Answers telephone calls and customer emails and provides information or otherwise assists or refers patrons as appropriate.
• Assist in checking library materials in and out, placing holds on materials for customers.
• Provides and encourages training opportunities to Books by Mail staff, conducts monthly Books by Mail staff meetings.
• Must possess knowledge of popular authors and current titles in order to provide reader’s advisory services for Books by Mail customers. Must be familiar with LWPL databases or reader’s advisory tools to best assist customers.
• Follows and enforces all policies as established by the Lake Wales Library Board, the Polk County Library Cooperative Governing Board.
• Assists in maintaining facilities by vacuuming and dusting; picking up; maintaining a safe and neat working environment.
• Participation in continuing education classes.
• Supervises volunteers assigned to Books by Mail.
• Balances Petty Cash and prepares cash report for Library Director.
• Collects and computes statistical data pertinent to Books by Mail Services; prepares monthly statistical reports for Library Director
• Tracks operating supply inventory, notifies Library Director or City Purchasing agent when inventory needs to be ordered. Stays within the operating budget provided by the Polk County Library Cooperative for salaries and operating supplies.
• Tracks available postage and notifies Library Director when replenishment of postagemachine is needed.
• Stays abreast of US Postal Service policies, fees, charges and other shipping rules and regulations that affect the Books by Mail service. Communicates with local postal employees or Postmaster when issues arise.
• Must have a thorough understanding of the US Postal Service’s Free Mail for the Blind and Disabled service and enforce all restrictions and policies of the service.
• Coordinates efforts to market the PCLC Books by Mail service through outreach efforts including fairs, festivals and personal contacts.
 

PERIPHERAL DUTIES
Serves as a member of various city employee committees, as available.
Assists other staff in the performance of their duties as required.
Other duties as required.

Qualifications

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
(A) High school diploma or GED, supplemented by two years of post-secondary education or training in library science, liberal arts, education or a related field, or
(B) Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
(A) Knowledge of the principles and practices of modern library systems and programs; knowledge of library circulation or processing techniques; knowledge of library classification systems; knowledge of basic office procedures including computers in a
windows environment;
(B) Skilled in the operation of tools and equipment.
(C) Ability to orally communicate effectively; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patrons, employees, supervisors, and the general public.
(D) Must have strong and excellent customer service skills
 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Valid Florida driver's license. Required to complete a minimum of 25 CEUs annually in library services, customer service or related fields.
