The John Carter Brown Library at Brown University is a world-renowned center for research focused on the early Americas (15th-19th centuries) and based on its exceptional collections; the JCB supports research and researchers through its digital initiatives, fellowships and programs including for Brown faculty and students and communities locally and around the world. The JCB is committed to expert cataloging and digitization of its collection. In 2023, the JCB Library launched its new digital door: Americana. Americana is a platform for users to access, read and annotate items from the JCB, and to create their own digital projects.

The JCB seeks a Metadata Specialist to join its growing team. The primary role is bifold: creating preliminary records for recently acquired items, so that they can be digitized and fully cataloged; and performing the data curation and migration of recently digitized items into different repositories.

Education and Experience

  • A Master’s degree in Library Science, Information Science, or a related field (strongly preferable) and a minimum of two years related experience, or equivalent professional experience in metadata creation.
  • Demonstrated ability with metadata creation and management in a library or similar setting, preferred.
  • Demonstrated strong understanding of metadata standards (e.g., Dublin Core, MARC, MODS), preferred.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent proficiency with integrated library systems platforms – including Ex Libris ILS (Alma and Primo) and Aeon.
  • Preferred experience and familiarity with digital repository platforms.
  • Preferred experience with data mining, data visualization and machine learning.
  • Experience with or demonstrated aptitude for handling rare materials in a careful and considerate manner.
  • Ability to work with Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Excel.
  • Some knowledge of other languages other than English relevant to the collection (i.e. French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, German or Indigenous languages of the Americas).
  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
