Are you passionate about history and genealogy? Do you have experience in library and research methods? If so, you might be the perfect candidate for the Library/Research Assistant and Docent position at the Washington County Historical Society.
The Washington County Historical Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the history and heritage of Washington County, Pennsylvania. We operate the Francis J. LeMoyne House, a National Historic Landmark and a stop on the Underground Railroad, and the Norma K. Grimes Research Library, which houses an extensive library and archive of books, documents, photographs, maps, genealogical materials, newspaper, and church, birth & death records.
As a Library/Research Assistant and Docent, you will:
- Sort, catalog, and organize research materials, such as documents, photographs, maps, newspapers, and other resources
- Sort and organize library volumes, such as books, journals, magazines, and newsletters
- Use genealogical materials and databases to conduct research and answer inquiries
- Assist visitors to the Norma K. Grimes Research Library in finding and accessing research materials and library volumes
- Help in fulfilling submitted research contracts by providing relevant information and sources
- Give tours at the Francis J. LeMoyne House and explain its historical significance and role in the Underground Railroad
- Maintain records and statistics of library usage and research requests
To qualify for this position, you must have:
- At least two years of experience in a library or research setting
- Knowledge of genealogical databases and sources
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
This is a part-time position that requires 20 hours of work per week. The work schedule varies by season: From May to August, the workdays are Wednesday to Saturday, from 11am to 4pm; from September to April, the work days are Tuesday to Saturday, from 11am to 4pm.
