Job summary:
Plan, direct and coordinate activities and programs of the Latah County Library District. Work closely with the Board of Trustees to develop an annual budget and periodic strategic plans. Work in partnership with the Latah Library Foundation and Friends groups to advance the goals of the District. Serve as an active member of the Valnet board of directors.
Essential job functions:
- Manage the day-to-day operation of the LCLD libraries and staff
- Direct the hiring, supervision, training and evaluation of staff
- Oversee expenditures and review financial reports
- Prepare and submit annual statistical reports
- Administer the budget approved by the Board of Trustees in an efficient manner
- Ensure all LCLD facilities are well-maintained
- Communicate clearly and regularly with staff, including regular meetings as appropriate
- Provide opportunities for staff training and continuing education
- Ensure all LCLD policies are followed
- Seek appropriate grants and funding
- Foster positive relationships among the LCLD, Latah County communities, and partner organizations
- Serve as liaison to the Friends of the Moscow Library and serve as a resource to branch managers in their role as liaisons to their local Friends groups
- Actively participate in Library Foundation meetings, activities and planning
- Ensure effective use of marketing and promotions to expand the reach and impact of the LCLD in the community
- Work collaboratively to ensure that interests of Latah County library users are well-represented
- Actively serve on the Valnet board of directors
- Maintain memberships in professional organizations and participate in professional development opportunities
- Maintain contact with municipal authorities in LCLD communities
- Work effectively with the Board of Trustees
- Perform duties of Secretary accurately, promptly and in accordance with laws and procedures
- Serve as ex officio member of Board committees
- Provide Board with current and accurate financial reports
- Prepare reports and documentation for monthly meetings and keep Board informed of library activities
- Provide Board with information on professional and legal developments that may impact the LCLD
- Contribute to the development of short- and long-term planning
- Recommend improvements to working conditions, salaries, and benefits for staff
- Present a draft budget to the Finance Committee for review before the full Board
- Recommend changes to LCLD policies as needed
- Provide trustee orientation information
- Review all grant applications that impact the LCLD
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics:
- ALA accredited MLIS degree
- Minimum of five years of increasingly responsible professional library work
- Experience in current and emerging library and technology trends and applications
- Demonstrated active participation in community and professional organizations and activities
Desirable qualifications:
- Minimum of three years’ experience as a Library Director in a medium-sized public library preferred
Physical Requirements
The physical demands of the role for a Library Director encompass a variety of activities essential to overseeing library operations. Mobility is crucial, as directors move around the library to supervise tasks, participate in meetings, and engage with both staff and patrons. Lifting and carrying are common, particularly when handling books, materials, and equipment during resource organization. Extended periods of either standing or sitting are expected, as directors dedicate long hours to desk work, meetings, and addressing staff or patrons. Additionally, extensive computer use is a regular part of the role, involving tasks like email communication, data analysis, and managing digital library systems.
