Job Information

Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.

These positions are represented by the Anchorage Municipal Employee Association (AMEA) and are subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the AMEA.

DEPARTMENT: Loussac Library
HOURS OF WORK: Hours vary; Monday through Sunday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
LOCATION OF WORK: 3600 Denali Street

These are regular, part-time positions working 18 hours per week.

Example of Duties

Check in and sort materials utilizing automated material handling system. Sort and shelve materials using basic alpha-numeric & Dewey Decimal systems; establish and maintain effective working relations with coworkers and the public; effectively communicate verbally and in writing in the English language; explain library policies and procedures clearly and accurately. Learn to operate & troubleshoot automated library systems & other standard office equipment. Demonstrate basic keyboarding skills and computer skills; perform detailed work accurately; work with people of varying cultures and backgrounds; demonstrate proficiency in daily practices and procedures of the library work unit. Sort books items at the shipping and receiving area as well as listening for deliveries. Provide directional & customer service while shelving on the floors. Other duties as needed.


Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent and previous work experience involving public contact.

Some duties require pushing, pulling and lifting items up to 50 pounds.
Preferences:
  • Prefer applicants with previous library shelving experience
  • Prefer applicants with knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System and alphabetization

Additional Important Information

Preference will be given to Anchorage Municipal Employees Association (AMEA) employees. AMEA employees who are successful in the screening process will be forwarded to the department for consideration prior to any non-AMEA applicants.
If selected for hire, the applicant must be capable of bending, stooping, stretching, lifting boxes weighing up to fifty (50) pounds, pushing fully loaded book trucks, and standing for up to four (4) hours at a time.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon satisfactory completion of a national criminal background investigation (AS 12.62.160) and (AS 12.62.400). Accordingly it will be necessary for the selected applicant to provide certain identification information and be fingerprinted. Fingerprint cards must be dated within 30 days from date requested. The processing fee of $48.25 plus the cost of being fingerprinted (variable) is the responsibility of the selected applicant and must be accomplished before beginning work.
If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted background check. A background check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.

Military Service Interview Preference:
Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.

Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
