Job description

GENERAL SUMMARY
The Library Clerk performs paraprofessional and technical work in operating and maintaining the public library. A Library Clerk actively supports and upholds the City's stated mission and values, assists in the day-to-day operations of the library and reports directly to the Library Manager. Library Clerks generally work in user services. User services work is directly with the public to help them find the information needed, loaning out library material, and general customer service.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintains an attractive and functional public area.
  • Handles library material (checking out, checking in, sorting, and shelving).
  • Assists the public in basic circulation functions such as registering new accounts, lending material, collecting fines, and processing inter-library loans.
  • Answers in-person inquiries, helps library users locate needed materials and refers users to other appropriate assistance.
  • Supervises computer use and trains the public in the use of the computer and equipment.
  • Assists the library division in improving services to the public.
  • Assists the library team in running programs for the public.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum and Preferred Entrance Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Two (2) years of customer service experience involving direct contact with the public.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Any combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to a Library Technician Certificate or two (2) years of college-level work in Library Arts, Library Science, or a related field.
  • Prior government, municipal, or non-profit environment experience.
  • Two (2) years of library experience in a public contact environment.
  • Previous experience using automated library systems.
  • Ability to speak and understand Spanish.
  • Prior experience working with children, seniors, and people with special needs.

Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job, may be substituted for evaluation at the discretion of City management.

Competencies for Successful Performance of Job Duties

Knowledge of:

  • Modern library principles, methods, and procedures.
  • Basic library reference materials and procedures.
  • Local reader interests, books, and authors.
  • Alphanumeric sequencing skills: the ability to quickly and accurately alphabetize, sort, and count.
  • Customer Service: Considerable understanding of principles and processes for providing great customer service.
  • Library Trends: Current knowledge of the principles, trends, and best practices of library science. Awareness of library related resources, databases, and networks including integrated library systems, bibliographic information, and cataloging rules.

Skill in:

  • Operating a computer keyboard, various library equipment, and/or office equipment.
  • Attention to detail
  • Basic Library Functions: must possess a basic understanding of the library's operations, purpose, and role in the community
  • Computer Basics: working knowledge of Microsoft Windows and general software knowledge (e.g., Microsoft Word, Internet, email)
  • Working with sensitivity and tact.

Ability to:

  • Take direction from supervisor, correct mistakes, and learn.
  • Work in a stressful environment with patience and good humor.
  • Ability to work with standard office equipment including computers, printers, copiers, change machines, fax machines and to be able to troubleshoot the equipment.
  • Work independently, organize and prioritize work, respond to varied/changing work demands and make decisions as required.
  • Function as a member of the library team is essential.
  • Be flexible.
  • Direct the work of library volunteers as needed.
  • Effectively present information and respond to questions from library customers.
  • Maintain confidentiality of library membership information.
  • Follow detailed instructions.
  • Carry out work responsibilities with a minimum of supervision.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with library customers, local government officials, local community groups, and other library staff.
  • Learn and abide by Maricopa Public Library policies and procedures.
