The Branch Supervisor leads a talented team of 7 staff, ensuring excellent service for patrons in all areas of library service from checking in and shelving materials, to helping patrons get and maintain active library cards, to ensuring that public computers, programming, and storytimes are running smoothly.
THE TEAM
As a Branch Supervisor, you will be part of the Beaverton City Library Public Services team and work collaboratively with the Community Engagement and Materials teams to support all branch staff. The Murray Scholls Library Branch is a vibrant, family-focused location with a full slate of storytimes and regular programming for youth.
UPCOMING PROJECTS
Key projects for the first 6-12 months in this position include:
  • Support the development and roll out of a library-wide Customer Service philosophy.
  • Review and revise training materials for new staff.
  • Work with staff to review and revise workflows.
  • Lead storytimes and programming for patrons.
  • Work with library leadership to move staff diversification initiatives forward through hiring practices.
This is a full-time, exempt, Management 2 (M2) position. The regular work schedule is Tuesday-Saturday and includes weekend shifts. The classification is Library Supervisor. There is one vacancy. Interviews will take place in January 2024.

  • Supervise the day-to-day operations of the Murray Scholls Library, with a monthly average circulation of 45,000 items and 10,000 visitors.
  • Build staff schedules to cover 5-day/week service and provide guidance, support and direction to scheduler.
  • Host storytimes and programming and provide backup for other staff who host storytimes and programming.
  • Staff all service points and participate in Materials Handling (circulation) throughout each week.
  • Support staff through difficult patron interactions with a focus on safety, an empathetic approach, and de-escalation.
  • Establish and implement goals, policies, and procedures for the team.
  • Hire and supervise staff, assigning and reviewing work.
  • Provide regular feedback and coaching to employees. Respond to employee grievances and oversee disciplinary processes.
  • Participate in the Public Services leadership team, and the library-wide Leadership team.
  • Plan, execute, and monitor projects. Use statistics, reports, and other measurement tools to ensure objectives are met.
  • Assist in preparing and monitoring team budget. Authorize purchases and payments for supplies, equipment, and contracted services.
  • Provide high-quality training for staff, ensuring that required technical competencies are met.
  • Stay up to date on current and emerging technology tools and trends; provide instructions to library users on library services. Train and guide others on technology tools and services.
  • Promote library services and programs in the community. Develop partnerships and collaborate with individuals and organizations.
  • Foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workspace, and a positive teamwork-oriented environment.
  • Actively promote an environment respectful of living and working in a multicultural society.

Minimum qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association-accredited program.
  • Three years' experience in a supervisory or lead role, including at least one year of leadership experience in a library; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience enabling the incumbent to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Ability to pass reference checks and education verification and satisfy the requirements of a background check.

Starting rate will be determined depending on relevant work experience as outlined in the Equal Pay Act. New hires who meet minimum requirements will start at step one. Higher steps may be offered to those who have additional years of directly related experience to the position within the posted wage range.
