Summary Statement
Library Assistant Home-based Services provides circulation, reference services, and technology support to library users while delivering highly effective customer service. Assists librarians with administrative and programming support to ensure library goals and expectations are met. Works with considerable independence under general supervision.
Essential Functions
  • Provides direct library services to Home-Based Services (HBS) users through material delivery visits. Follows a regular delivery schedule, and identifies and onboards new users and service locations. Drives HBS assigned vehicle following all city safety protocols and assists in overseeing vehicle maintenance. Conducts visits following relevant safety protocols.
  • Performs readers' advisory and reference services for individuals, facilities, groups, and organizations, drawing on knowledge of library collections, databases, and practices. Facilitates access to physical and virtual library collections and resources that meet users' reading preferences, required formats, and other relevant criteria. Performs customer service tasks in person, over the phone, and by email.
  • Performs circulation functions, such as pulling holds, monitoring overdue and lost items, and checking materials in and out. Resolves complex circulation issues, assists users with routine queries, explains and interprets library policies and procedures, and resolves user issues. Maintains accurate user account information in the library's database.
  • Develops and implements programs for the community served, including researching, planning, preparing materials, publicizing, and delivering library programs, both within library facilities, as well as offsite. Liaises with individuals and community organizations with whom the library has partnered.
  • Orders supplies for the office and programs performs other office tasks to ensure efficient and effective service delivery, compiles statistics and creates reports, acts as a team leader when librarians or other senior staff are unavailable, innovates solutions for inefficient facility provisions and procedures to promote a functional working environment best, and assists with various department or division projects.

Requirements
Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
High school diploma or equivalent and one year of experience working in a public library or related setting
Functional knowledge of customer service techniques and office software applications.
Ability to:
  • learn and use automated library systems
  • work independently and use initiative while performing duties
  • prioritize a broad range of administrative tasks
  • exercise tact, patience, diplomacy, cultural sensitivity, and courtesy when dealing with customers
  • carry out day-to-day activities independently within established guidelines and procedures
  • communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance
  • perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor, and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation.
    Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.
    Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
    Two or more years of work experience providing customer service in a public library, with seniors, or a similar environment.
    One or more years of experience with community engagement and partnership development.
    Knowledge of: development and delivery of library programs; library research techniques; adult and/or children's literature; and senior and community services.
    Licensing And Other Requirements

Valid state-issued driver's license.

Physical Efforts
While performing the duties of this job the employee is always lifting/carrying up to 35 pounds and rarely lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds. Also, the employee is always pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds, frequently pushing/pulling up to 75 pounds and occasionally pushing/pulling up to 100 pounds. The noise level is occasionally moderate. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, smell and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.
Working Environment
The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, areas of dust, odors, mist and gases or other airborne matter. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria and chemicals.
This position works: some weekends and evenings and schedules vary.
