Position Purpose
Directs the operation of the school library/media center. Provides services and resources that allow students to develop skills in locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and using information to solve problems. Serves as teacher, materials expert, and curriculum adviser to ensure that library/media center is involved in instructional programs of the school.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Prepares, justifies, and administers the school library program budget to support specific program goals.
  • Establishes processes and procedures for selection, acquisition, circulation, resource sharing, and other activities that ensure appropriate resources are available when needed.
  • Shares with the learning community policies concerning issues such as materials selection, circulation, reconsideration of materials, copyright, privacy, and acceptable use.
  • Collaborates with teachers and students; designs and teaches engaging inquiry, learning experiences, and assessments that incorporate multiple literacies and foster critical thinking.
  • Evaluates and encourages the use of existing and emerging technologies to engage students, improve learning, and provide 24/7 access to digital information resources for the entire learning community.
  • Collects and analyzes data to improve instruction, and to demonstrate correlations between the school library program and student achievement.

Safety
  • Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing; according to established safety procedures.
  • Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education, as well as District policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of computers, peripherals, Web 2.0 applications, and commercially available electronic resources.
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiation of instruction necessary to create effective and productive student-centered learning environments.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of library and information science, including philosophy and techniques of library science, as well as researching materials and resources.
  • Knowledge of reference and bibliographic print resources as well as a variety of online bibliographic and full-text databases.
  • Knowledge of secondary assigned content facts, concepts, theories, and principles that are being taught and learned.
  • Skill at the intermediate level, working with Microsoft Office 365, especially Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.

Travel Requirements
  • Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Physical & Mental Demands, Work Hazards
  • Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including computer and peripherals; standard library equipment including imaging equipment; standard instructional equipment.
  • Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; frequent stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
  • Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse; regular overhead reaching; climbing ladders; using step stools; frequent walking.
  • Lifting: Frequent lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); occasional moderate lifting and carrying (15-44 pounds).
  • Exerting: Frequent exerting up to 25 pounds of force to move objects; occasional exerting up to 100 pounds of force to push a loaded book cart.
  • Environment: Works in an office setting; exposure to biological and chemical hazards such as mold and dust; may require occasional irregular and/or prolonged hours.
  • Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.
  • Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions.

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Education: Master's degree from accredited college or university in librarianship from a program accredited by the American Library Association, or a master's degree with a specialty in school librarianship from a program recognized by the American Association of School Librarians in an educational unit accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (ALA Policy 54.2.2).
  • Certification/License: Valid Texas School Librarian Certificate; as an alternate, individuals may apply if they are eligible for, or currently possess the appropriate emergency permit (18 hours in program preferred).
  • Experience: Experience in library/media center in public school setting preferred; experience at inner-city schools with diverse student populations preferred.
