The Library's mission is to provide resources, services, and a place to read, connect, relax, and learn. The Library supports literacy, life-long learning, civic engagement, and cultural awareness. To achieve these goals, the Library provides: access to library materials and guidance in finding quality, trusted information, events for all ages to support life-long learning and early literacy, and school year and summer programs to promote a lifetime love of reading. The Library helps adults and children by offering access to hundreds of thousands of books, audiobooks, e-books and other materials. Thousands of patrons are reached through outreach activities to schools, homebound patrons, Roxbury Book Nook, and community events.
What We're Looking For:The Beverly Hills Public Library has an opening for a Librarian III. Duties will include directing staff on policies, implementing goals, objectives, and procedures, in addition to scheduling, training, supervising, and evaluating full-time and part-time staff. This position will also be assisting with the recommendation of collection development policies and resources, developing, organizing, implementing, and overseeing programs as requested, and monitoring and overseeing expenditures in areas of assignment.
The incumbent is in a public facing environment and answers questions and provides information to the public; investigates complaints and recommends corrective action as necessary to resolve complaints. They will be part of the Library's supervisory/management team and therefore will be assigned to work as the Library's Supervisor-in-Charge, responsible for addressing patron concerns and issues. The successful candidate will be able to prioritize tasks, display a strong commitment to teamwork, and possess strong communication skills to push forward the goals of the Library. The ideal candidate will be flexible, have a passion for public service, the ability to work independently, communicate effectively in writing and verbally, and set clear expectations and deadlines and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, peers, subordinates, and the public.

Schedule and Hours:
All work will performed on-site, 5 days a week. This is a non-teleworking position. Additionally, incumbents will be assigned to work one evening shift per week, 1 weekend day per month and some Sundays depending on program needs.

Disaster Service Workers: All City of Beverly Hills employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
Major Duties
Job Summary: Under the direction of a Divisional Supervisor/Senior Librarian, responsible for direct and indirect supervision of professional and other library personnel when assigned to area of responsibility.
  • Administers major library programs, collections or services.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of library goals, objectives, policies and procedures.
  • Participates in selecting books and materials for inclusion in program collections and provides assistance in area of specialty in developing programs to stimulate patron's interest.
  • Coordinates and supervises acquisition, cataloging, classification, circulation, distribution, and care and preservation of library materials.
  • Provides reference and readers advisory service.
  • Responds to citizen's complaints and inquiries.
  • Assists in preparing and administering the program budgets.
  • Participates in recommending facility modifications, purchases and maintenance of equipment needed in the library programs.

Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a Masters of Library Science degree from an accredited college or university, supplemented by specialized courses related to the library program area to which assigned; five years of professional library experience in a public library including experience in the field of specialization required; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Problem solving skills to respond to citizen complaints.
  • Skill in administering and developing programs in assigned area.
  • Skill in preparing program budgets.
  • Thorough knowledge of standard library practices and procedures.
  • Skill in locating books and materials to be included in assigned area's programs.
  • Understanding of facilities maintenance.

Retirement
The City offers the CalPERS 2% at 62 formula for new CalPERS members.; OR 2.5% at 55 formula for existing "classic" CalPERS members with less than a six-month break in service from another CalPERS or CalPERS reciprocal agency. All employees of the Management & Professional Association will pay their CalPERS member contribution. Health Plan
The City currently offers cafeteria plan which includes medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage for employees and their dependents. In addition, the City provides life insurance and a disability plan for employees.
Leave Time
Vacation: 80 to 160 hours of annual vacation accrual depending on years of service.
Holiday: 10 paid holidays per year
Sick Leave: 96 hours per year
Personal Holiday: 18 hours per fiscal year
Administrative Leave: 80 hours per calendar year (prorated based on start date)
City employees currently work a 9/80 or 5/40 hour work week schedule.
