The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to working with the public and providing an in depth and well-rounded print and digital children's and teen collection to meet the diverse needs of our community. This position will assist and oversee maintenance of all children's and teen collections system-wide. Candidates must have strong reader's advisory skills and be prepared to provide both education on best practices to staff and direct reader's advisory service to customers. Candidates should have outstanding communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, strong research capabilities, experience managing budgets, and competency with technologies including personal computer applications and devices. This position provides direct reference service to customers one evening a week and on rotating weekends.
This is an exempt position. Below is a typical work schedule. The successful candidate will demonstrate flexibility should schedule changes be needed to meet the demands of the workgroup.
Starting Salary Range: $45,360.00 - $80,653.00,depending on experience and qualifications
The typical days and hours of work:
Tuesday - Friday, 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM
Saturday rotation (first weekend), 9:15 AM - 6:15 PM (day off the following week)
Sunday rotation (once per month), 12:45 PM - 5:15 PM (half day off the following week)
- Selects a wide array of children's and teen materials to meet diverse community needs, in both print and e-material format.
- Efficiently manages an annual budget from multiple funding sources.
- Assists with evaluation and maintenance of children's and teen collections at all library locations.
- Provides excellent reader's advisory assistance to customers, both in person and digitally.
- Assists customers in person, online, and by telephone with information needs. Must be proficient in utilizing the library catalog, online subscription databases, and the Internet. Supports public computing users with their use of library electronic resources, the Internet, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Participates on library planning teams and serves on special projects as assigned.
- Stays abreast of best practices in libraries and publishing trends through training and development activities, reading professional literature, and participating in professional activities.

- Thorough knowledge of library methods, principles, and practices.
- Thorough knowledge of reference materials and tools of research.
- Considerable knowledge of reader interest and of books and authors.
- Knowledge of standard computer keyboard configurations and ability to access, interpret, and record information using a video display terminal and electronic keyboard.
- Ability to establish and maintain courteous and tactful relationships with associates and library patrons.
- Ability to: push a loaded book cart, weighing up to 250 pounds; reach, bend, stoop, or squat and arrange books on library shelves; use manually operated office tools and supplies such as scissors, staplers, glue, and/or typewriter; hold, inspect, turn single pages, and read books weighing up to fifteen pounds with pages made from papers of a wide range of quality and thickness.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally, in writing, and/or by whatever creative means are necessary to cross communication barriers.
- An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
- MLS degree from an ALA accredited institution
- Outstanding communication (written and oral) and public presentation skills
- A strong customer service commitment
- Knowledge of literature and informational trends
- An advanced level of proficiency with technology, including mobile and personal computing, integrated library systems, and media production.
- Spanish language or ASL skills are preferred.
- Attainment of passing scores on pre-employment tests.
- Evening and weekend shifts in rotation with other public service staff are required.
- Candidates need to be able to travel to different worksites throughout the workday when job assignment requires, therefore will need reliable transportation.
- Residency within thirty minutes lawful driving time of the corporate limits of the City of Wichita will be required of the successful applicant
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement.
