Position Title: Resource Management AmeriCorps Member - 480 HR
Grant Program: OYSI 22EDBDC0020010 / EAP 21EDBDC0010041
Position Summary:
Lewis and Clark National Historical Park is recruiting for two 480 HR Resource Management AmeriCorps members beginning June 3, 2024, to August 30, 2024 (480 hours, 12 weeks). Starting date is negotiable to accommodate student schedules. The members will serve with the park's Resource Management Division and will primarily be assisting with invasive plant control and monitoring projects. The focus is on the months of June, July, and August due to the growth season of vegetation. Lewis and Clark National Historical Park is located on both banks of the Columbia River in Oregon and Washington and is composed of wetlands, upland forests, coastal dunes, and prairies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Invasive plant control (70%)

Duties may include conducting surveys of forest and wetlands for invasive plants, mechanical removal using shovels and string trimmers, and application of herbicide when appropriate. Members will receive training in integrated pest management principles, safe herbicide application and plant identification skills.
  • Monitoring projects (20%)

Duties may include surveying forest monitoring plots, conducting wetland vegetation surveys, performing driving surveys for elk, and entering data into a database.
  • Administrative tasks (10%)

Duties may include formal training in general safety, policies, and exposure to job opportunities within the National Park Service. Duties will include creating a report about the work completed during the summer at the conclusion of the members AmeriCorps term.
Required Qualifications:
  • Current driver's license, clean driving record, and personal transportation
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work outdoors and hike, and in inclement weather across uneven terrain
  • Willingness to submit to a government background check
  • Ability to safely use hand tools and power tools such as loppers and string trimmers
  • Willingness to carry and use herbicides
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25lbs
  • Willingness to work as part of a team in an outdoor setting
  • Ability to paddle and self-rescue out of a kayak or canoe (training provided)
  • A positive attitude and willingness to learn

Desired Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of Northwest regional natural resources and plants
  • College level coursework in biology
  • Previous experience using GPS units, maps, and compasses for navigating off-trail

Duty Location:
Duties are performed within the Resources Division located in the Fort Clatsop Unit of Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, 92381 Fort Clatsop Road in Astoria, OR.
Terms of Employment:
Each AmeriCorps member will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting June 3, 2024, to August 30, 2024. The members must complete a minimum of 480 service hours by the end of their term. The members will receive a 30-minute lunch each day and this lunch break does not count towards AmeriCorps member service hours. Training will not exceed 20% of total member service hours.
Program Benefits:
$7,200 living allowance dispersed on a monthly basis and upon successful completion of program requirements, education award amount of $1,824.07.
The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food and transportation. There is no housing available at the park. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal and driving background check.
