What You'll Do
The Legal Literacy Instructor within the YWCA's WorkFirst program will play a crucial role in empowering WorkFirst participants by enhancing their understanding of legal systems and their legal rights. The main function of this position is to teach WorkFirst participants Legal Literacy through a combination of in-person and online workshops, classes, and one-on-one sessions. You will develop legal instruction curricula in partnership with WorkFirst participants and YWCA staff.
 
Your Impact: Your goal is to equip WorkFirst participants with the knowledge, language, and tools they need to effectively navigate family law, criminal justice, and public benefit systems, with a focus on fostering self-advocacy and informed decision-making.
Expectations of your role:
    • Assess, create, and implement individual learning plans for each student incorporating learning needs and goals.
    • Develop curricula on legal topics including but not limited to workplace discrimination, wage and hour laws, tenant rights and responsibilities, safety planning, crime prevention, legal navigation, restraining and protection orders, consumer rights and managing debt and contacting creditors/debtors.
    • Monitor, evaluate and document student progress through self-reporting, periodic assessment, feedback-gathering, attendance tracking and testing.
    • Engage with community partners and current research to stay updated on legal laws, policies, and resources, ensuring the curriculum remains relevant and comprehensive.
Must have's to be successful:
    • Strong orientation and familiarity toward legal advocacy, with experience navigating multiple systems (municipal court, superior court, legal systems, and law enforcement).
    • Knowledge and sensitivity in working with survivors of gender-based violence incorporating trauma-informed approaches in educational settings.
    • Demonstrated understanding of the intersection of racism and poverty, specifically for African Americans and women of color. 

    • Preferred Qualifications
    • Bachelors Degree related to Criminal Justice, Criminology, Law, Sociology, Human Services or Education.
    • Previous work experience with teaching, instruction, or leading workshops with a focus on adult education and diverse learning environments.
    • Previous work experience with legal advocacy or with legal systems and working with vulnerable populations.
    • Skills in cultural competency and inclusivity, with the ability to engage students from diverse backgrounds effectively.
Hours, Rate, and Benefits
    • Hourly Rate/Salary $25.00
    • Hours: 20 hours per week
    • Excellent benefits package including medical insurance, retirement plan, plus generous vacation, holiday, and sick leave plans
    • At the time of hire, employees may enroll voluntarily in the Fidelity 403b Plan
    • After two years of employment, employees are eligible to participate in the YWCA Retirement Fund
Physical Requirements
    • Continuously performs indoor work including sitting while operating a computer
    • Continuously exchanges information through listening and talking with clients, agency staff, employers, representatives of community organizations, and other individuals in the community
    • Frequently stands, walks, sits, and climbs in performing duties in the workspace and in the community
    • Frequently reaches and grasps in using telephones, computers, fax machines, and other office equipment and supplies
    • Occasionally lifts/carries 10 pounds or less
    • Occasionally stands, squats, kneels, and bends while performing job duties
