Job description

Legal Intern – Beginning Summer 2024

12 Month Duration

The mission of the Allen Institute is to unlock the complexities of bioscience and advance our knowledge to improve human health. Using an open science, multi-scale, team-oriented approach, the Allen Institute focuses on accelerating foundational research, developing standards and models, and cultivating new ideas to make a broad, transformational impact on science.

The mission of the Allen Institute administration team is to provide support and structure to the scientific divisions. Coinciding with the team science approach, administration helps facilitate team learning and the overall mission of the institute.

The Allen Institute is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Legal Intern to join our Legal & Governance Department. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience and exposure to legal issues within a nonprofit organization. Our Legal Department plays a crucial role in supporting the Institute's mission by providing legal guidance and support across all departments.

Essential Functions

  • Legal Research and Analysis: Conduct research on legal issues and provide concise summaries and analysis to support the Legal Department's work. This may include researching federal and state laws, regulations, and case law relevant to the Institute's operations.
  • Contract Review and Drafting: Assist in reviewing, drafting, and editing contracts, agreements, and other legal documents. Ensure compliance with legal requirements and internal policies
  • Policy and Compliance: Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure legal compliance across the organization. This may involve reviewing and updating existing policies and providing recommendations for improvement.
  • Intellectual Property Support: Assist with intellectual property matters, including technology transfer, patent and trademark research, licensing, prosecution, and enforcement
  • Legal Documentation and Record-keeping: Assist in maintaining legal files, documentation, and databases. Ensure accurate and organized record-keeping for easy retrieval of information
  • Overall support of Legal Projects: Provide general support to the Legal Department, including assisting with on-going and special projects as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Education and Experience

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited law school program located in Seattle
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Familiarity with legal research tools and databases

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive information with discretion
  • Prior work experience in an in-house counsel or professional environment
  • Science background preferred, though not required
  • Non-profit experience helpful
  • Sound judgment and problem-solving skills
  • Self-starter with the ability to meet or exceed deadlines, prioritize, and multi-task in a fast-paced, changing environment

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • This role is currently able to work in a hybrid work environment. We are a Washington State employer, and any remote work must be performed in Washington State.
  • This Legal Internship starts in the summer of 2024 with a commitment to work 40 hours per week during the summer, and an option to extend into the school year at a reduced to 12-19 hours per week during the school year. Flexible working hours can be accommodated to accommodate academic schedules.

Salary

  • $20.00 per hour (non-negotiable)
