Summer Legal Internship

Are you a hardworking and enthusiastic 2L or 3L looking for a paid Legal Internship this summer ? Join us at Young Brothers, LLC (YB), Hawaii’s only authorized interisland cargo water carrier!

For 2024, one (1) summer Legal Intern will be selected to participate in the YB summer Legal Internship program. The YB summer Legal Intern will have the opportunity to gain valuable practical experience and contribute to the ongoing operations of a regulated business that transports freight of all kinds throughout the state of Hawaii. The YB summer Legal Intern will have the opportunity to make connections in a variety of professional fields or areas of interest, particularly in the fields of utility regulation, maritime/admiralty law, and local government affairs. The YB legal team will provide guidance to and evaluate the talent of the YB Legal Intern. The YB summer Legal Intern will actively contribute to meaningful projects and work closely with a mentor and with senior leadership.

Duration: 90 days or less; May 2024 to September 2024. Flexible start and end dates.

Location: YB Administration Offices: 1331 N. Nimitz Highway (Pier 39/40)

Pay: $27/hour

Schedule: Schedule will be determined in collaboration with YB’s Vice President of External and Legal Affairs/Legal and the applicable Associate General Counsel assigned to mentor the Intern at the beginning of the program

Legal Intern Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support the legal and regulatory team in various legal and regulatory projects, as needed.
  • Assist with various forms of legal research, analysis, and drafting.
  • Lend support in areas such as contracts, utility regulatory process/affairs, legislative process/affairs, and other day-to-day matters.

Requirements
  • Must be currently enrolled in a J.D. program at an ABA accredited school.
  • GPA of at least 3.0
  • Preference for students who have completed Administrative Law, Business Law, Contract Law, Maritime/Admiralty Law, Regulatory Law, and Real Property Law courses. Basic understanding of corporate organizational documents, accounting principles, and the ability to adapt to working on multiple computer software programs is also preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong computer skills (proficient in typical office use and ability/willingness to learn new software, if necessary)
  • Effective and comfortable using MicroSoft Office products
  • Ability to work well in teams
  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail

The YB summer Legal Internship will be selected based on candidate qualifications and interview performance. There is no promise or guarantee of placement of employment.
