Form of workThe American Sign Language Program at the University of Virginia invites applications for a three-year Lecturer, General Faculty, position (9-month, non-tenure track, three-year appointment with renewals). UVA’s innovative ASL Program provides students at the University of Virginia with a rigorous education in ASL and Deaf studies. It offers fulfillment of the four-semester World Language Requirement in the College of Arts and Sciences and a Minor in ASL and Deaf Culture. The anticipated start date for this position is August 10, 2024.
The teaching load is three courses per semester. Candidates should be able to teach ASL language courses in a voice-off, immersive classroom environment at the beginning, intermediate, and/or advanced levels using a first-year curriculum that we developed, supplemented by some commercially available curricula for our second and third-year intermediate and upper-level courses. Appropriate university, professional, and community service will also be expected.UVA’s ASL Program is dedicated to teaching students ASL language skills as well as increasing their knowledge about Deaf people’s culture and experiences. The program offers courses in deaf and disability studies, American deaf history, deafness in literature and film, Sign Language linguistics, deaf anthropology, and similar areas. Graduates of our program have gone on to further study in Gallaudet University’s graduate programs in SLP, Audiology, Social Work, Interpreting, and Mental Health Counseling.The University of Virginia is committed to providing Sign Language interpreters to meet faculty, student, and staff need for all University functions. QualifiationsThis position requires an M.A. in the areas of ASL, Deaf Studies, Education, Linguistics Sign Language Interpreting, or a related field. The successful candidate must have native or near-native proficiency in ASL and experience teaching at the university level. ASLTA certification is preferred, but not required. The successful candidate should have extensive experience with the Deaf community and will be expected to bring a level of enthusiasm, excitement, and innovation to teaching that further enhances our program’s growth and dynamism.
