Job Summary:
Youthprise is collaborating with young people throughout the metro and state to pursue the opportunities and challenges that young people have identified for our legislative policy agenda. This role will serve as the key liaison with young leaders and the policy work. Supporting young people to prepare to enter advocacy work meaningfully.
This year, our anticipated legislative work will fall under two key priority areas:
- Expanding Youth Access to Democratic Institutions
- Pathways to Youth Ownership
We will also support work in child welfare, youth justice, and youth homelessness.
Compensation:
This part-time position is under 20 hours per week, paying $25.00/hour.
Essential Job Functions:
Key Projects 2024
1. Youth Leadership & Adult Skill Cultivation
- Maintain communication and work with Youth Fellows and organizers on the key legislative platform items for this year and provide support, as possible and directed by the Policy Director, on policies we support.
- Develop workshops to prepare young leaders who want to take up different roles in policy work—attending hearings, testifying, meeting with legislators, social media, etc.
- Support Adult Allies to Collaborate with Youth Leaders
- Interview and determine adult leaders on how to engage more fully in OYN leadership policies.
- Connect with all youth leaders of member organizations.
2. Working with Community Partners
- Support relationships with youth leadership groups on the Youthprise policy agenda items (both leading and supporting)
- Facilitate or co-facilitate workshops or focus groups to gain a better understanding of youth goals or perspectives to prepare for testimony or community storytelling related to policy items.
- Communicate the objectives of the Twin Cities Opportunity Youth Network to the community and potential partners.
- Facilitate communication between youth boards, partners, and local prevention and intervention agencies by hosting regular conference calls, in-person meetings, or coordinating regular email updates to ensure activity alignment.
- Participate in the P3 Podcast as necessary.
4. Data
- Support and maintain data on all policy-related activities during the session.
Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Minimum: Intent or currently pursuing secondary or postsecondary skills.
- Priority: Enrolled in a course or degree program that requires a paid internship in policy, advocacy, community engagement, youth development.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Ability to share experiences with community leaders in a way that preserves their own dignity and moves the work forward.
- Ability to build strong relationships across various community groups.
- Demonstrated desire to support with advocacy and policy development.
- Willingness to use oral and written communication skills and the ability to use current technology (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and/or willingness to be coached in this area.
- Demonstrated ability to be at ease with individuals representing a broad spectrum of beliefs, backgrounds, and ideologies to work in crafting solutions and/or willingness to be coached in this area.
Working Conditions and Environment:
This position is hybrid, with many hours that may take place at the MN Capitol or in the community. The building is accessible and smoke-free. This position works during regular business hours and may include evening and/or weekend hours.
