Job Summary and Qualifications

POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for performing all decontamination and sterilization procedures and processes in Sterile Processing department. Teaches all methods of sterilization, testing and maintenance of equipment and verification of sterility. Properly handles all instrumentation and surgical equipment. 


JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES:

1. Operates sterilizers according to standard procedures.

2. Cooperates with other sterilization personnel with taking call.

3. Practices biohazardous waste separation per policy and procedure.

4. Responsible for receiving, sorting, cleaning and sterilizing supplies and equipment.

5. Cleans and stores equipment in between usages.

6. Reprocesses all instrumentation and trays from the following: Emergency Room, Radiology, Respiratory, CVL Lab, Labor and Delivery, Women’s Center OR, Other units as necessary.

7. Maintains shelf stock level of storeroom supplies and restock supply carts to par level by ordering from Central Supply.

8. Sorts, assembles, and inspects instrument trays reporting all defects/damage and malfunctions.

9. Loads and processes washers/decontaminators according to standard procedures.

10. Removes and sorts items from washer/decontaminators and assembles items according to standard procedures.

11. Processes all items for sterilization and checks all items for package integrity.

12. Cleans all equipment and case carts according to standard procedures and check for proper operation.

13. Prepares instruments for clean or sterile packaging and stores them.

14. Demonstrates ability to process sterile trays and packs using proper testing and chart procedure.

15. Maintains logs and documentation for all items sterilized.

16. Utilizes heat sealer and peel pack machine according to manufacturer recommendation and/or policy and procedure.

17. Keeps sterilization logs current, ensures proper documentation.

18. Maintains communication with supervisor, staff and OR services coordinators consistently.

19. Inspects trays randomly to insure completeness and make sure all items are in good condition.

20. Maintains and updates pick sheets for optimum usage.

21. Performs other related functions as assigned.

GENERAL


1. Analyzes and informs director of needs for instrumentation.

2. Observes staff for efficiency and completeness of processing instrument trays

3. Supervises, orients and instructs personnel emphasizing importance of quality in Sterile Processing.

4. Inspects area daily for compliance with policies, procedures, regulations and standards. Takes corrective action when violations occur with input from supervisor.

5. Maintains quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control standards for area.

6. Maintains open relationship with all department utilizing Sterile Processing. Gives feedback to departments as needed.

7. Supervises and assist with care and maintenance of departmental equipment used in performance of duties. Request maintenance and repair of equipment and maintains records.

8. Performs other duties as directed/required.

9. Performs random audits for quality of care in preparing surgical instrument trays.

10. Serves as a liaison with vendors and reinforces adherence to policies and procedures for consignment instrumentation. Reports deficiencies in compliance.

INTERGRATION AND COORDINATION OF SERVICES:

Maintains collaborative/cooperative relationships with others in the organization by sharing meaningful information, soliciting feedback and exhibiting respect and support. Integrates department’s services with the hospital’s primary function.

1. Is proactive in developing a network between and within departments.

2. Collaborates with internal customers prior to implementing department changes impacting those customers. Gets feedback once change has been implemented.

3. Is proactive in exchanging feedback/recognition with staff and director.

4. Actively promotes and supports facility’s philosophy, mission, vision and Code of Ethics and Compliance.

5. Attends and actively participates in meetings assigned by Director.


EDUCATION REQUIRED AND/OR PREFERRED: 

High School Graduate or GED preferred.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED OR PREFERRED: 

2 years’ experience as a Sterile Processing tech required. 

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

Demonstrated communications and customer service skills, success in organizing work and ability to multi-task. Ability to follow written and oral instructions. Ability to read, write, and understand oral instructions

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

Certification in Sterile Processing required.
