The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) is a department of the government of the U.S. state of Texas. The TDCJ is responsible for statewide criminal justice for adult offenders, including managing offenders in state prisons, state jails, and private correctional facilities, funding and certain oversight of community supervision, and supervision of offenders released from prison on parole or mandatory supervision. The TDCJ operates the largest prison system in the United States.
TDCJ is looking for a DBA Team Lead. The current team has 4 DBA’s, one contracts and 3 FTE’s. They just completed a migration from DB2 to Microfocus in the cloud on SQL server 2019 and Windows 2019 and need someone to come in and work alongside the team and reporting to the director. TDCJ is part of the Data Center Services contract with DIR. Atos runs the on-prem data center and private cloud and Rackspace oversees the cloud. TDCJ has someone to manager the private cloud Atos side but the public cloud where they need coverage. The dedicated support is not there with Rackspace and they need someone at the agency managing the day to day. This is the production database for Microfocus environment – hosting all inmate management systems, financials, all of the critical systems that TDCJ runs. They will be supporting the Java environment and web apps too. Microfocus does have some interesting things for DBA’s in the cloud and this person will be able to work with that. The DBA needs to have the ability to manage technical needs and upgrades, serve as a team leader and will be responsible for maintenance windows once a month - server updates and testing to make sure everything looks right.
There is a 24/7 on call rotation and once a month the DBA’s may need to work 3-4 hours on a Saturday night. The DBA needs to willing to work after hours on the rotation. They underwent a huge migration from DB2 to the new cloud environment on January 7th and they are still trying to get normalized – first couple weeks they were down.
Day to Day:
• Keeping up with diff regions
• Dev and QA DB’s in sync and back-ups and reapplying to different instances with prod data so they can do their work
• With DCS, Atos and Rackspace – going to a semi-managed environment with efforts with DCS and DIR to get the endpoints to look and make changes to the Azure
• They are moving MS and they are building a replacement inmate system, PowerApps and CRM Dynamics apps
• That Database will have a service bus between them, updates on one side and updates on the other side
• Setting up servers for clustering and ability for DR. As you set that up the back-ups, how to do you keep it going with QA and get to that point where tech is helping with replications
• Fine tuning and optimization
Must-Haves:
• Experience as a Senior DBA or Lead (will be responsible for leading, training, and mentoring other DBA’s)

• PowerShell for automation (highly preferred), an yocu create a DTS package through agents, differential and scripting through PowerShell
