Reports to the School Health Programs Coordinator
Under the Coordinator of School Health Programs provide education, mentoring and support to WCPS nursing personnel, school staff and families. May also provide direct nursing care to students who require medical support in order to access the instructional program; assist students in achieving individual student educational objectives.
Minimum Requirements
Must possess a current license as a Registered Nurse from the Maryland State Board of Nursing, Bachelor's Degree or part of compact state license.
Possess and maintain current CPR and First Aid certification by a recognized certification body (e.g. American Red Cross, Heart Association).
Minimum of two years' experience as a Registered Nurse with pediatric experience.
Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle.
May require physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull or push heavy objects or materials between 30 - 40 lbs.
Ability to work in a self-directed and clinically autonomous manner, demonstrating strong decision making and professional judgment.
Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this position.
Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.
Preferred Qualifications
Interest and desire to work with children with developmental disabilities and special health care needs.
Previous experience in school health.
Medication Administration Trainer Certification.
Experience with gastrostomy tube, tracheotomy and ventilator care.
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other medical professionals, students and parents/guardians, school staff and the general public.
Role Responsibilities
Knowledge of the Maryland Nurse Practice Act and the Delegation of Nursing Functions.
Provide Medication Administration Training to appropriate WCPS staff.
Assist in the development, writing and implementation health care plans for specific individual students, and other supportive written documents for implementing care.
Assess, plan, implement and evaluate health services for children with special health care needs as required, including nursing assessments to be completed for students with a disability.
Maintain follow-up documentation for Medication Technicians and health paraprofessionals.
Mentor RN's and LPN's, CMT's and health paraprofessionals employed by Washington County Public Schools.
Review medical records and Health Plans for each student with a 1:1 health personnel including review of medications (dosage instructions, actions, side effects, etc.) and supportive service.
Act as resource person to assist with health problems, feeding and hygiene and use of special equipment for nursing personnel working 1:1 with student.
Delegate duties to appropriate personnel.
Be available and flexible to substitute if needed in the absence of regular nursing personnel working 1:1 with a student.
Willingness and ability to accompany students with special medical needs on field trips to various locations.
Administer medications and treatments to students in a safe and professional manner from written orders of the student's physician.
Maintain accurate medication treatment and health profile records.
Assess the sick student to determine the student's wellness and ability to participate in school activities.
Evaluate and render first aid and emergency care to the student as the need arises as directed in the Maryland State School Health Services Guidelines (Manual of First Aid Procedures for Maryland Schools and Guide for Emergency Care in Maryland Schools).
Educate school staff on medical information and drug effects as needed.
Assist to develop/coordinate professional development for the WCPS nursing staff.
Contact parents regarding illnesses and health matters of students as needed.
Perform staffing and scheduling duties of nursing personnel.
Performs nursing duties in an ethical and professional manner.
Maintains confidentiality and privacy of client communications and client health record.
Maintain ongoing communication with Meritus School Health staff and other agencies as needed.
Demonstrate courteous and professional demeanor to all stakeholders of Washington County Public Schools.
Participate in training as required to update or maintain skills.
To perform other duties as requested by immediate supervisor.
