Title: Lead Nurse Practitioner CTICU
Shift: Nights (rotating days)
Reporting to: NBI Lead CTS NP, Director of CTICU Intensivists JCMC, Cardiac Surgery Chief
Job Summary
The Lead Nurse Practitioner functions as an independent care provider in collaboration with the medical/surgical staff. The lead will manage and develop the clinical and business operations for the CTICU NPs as well as participate and lead in all aspects of pre and postoperative care of the cardiac surgical patient in conjunction with the CTS surgical staff, and under the supervision of the CTS Medical Leadership both inpatient and outpatient services. The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for performing duties independently following established and standardized procedures The Lead APN is a leadership position that fulfills the role of clinical team leader, mentor, supporter, and clinician resource. In addition, the Lead APN will be responsible for continually assessing and retooling clinical workflows in conjunction with the northern department of cardiac surgery team members and other site leadership in order to maintain effective, efficient practice.
Essential Functions
- Assurance that clinical setting is functional and equipped for daily patient care.
- Work with clinical staff to maintain or exceed expected weekly / monthly productivity.
- Ongoing monitoring and adjustment of processes responsible for smooth and effective patient flow.
- Promote Quality Improvement process and support network improvement initiatives and quality measure goals.
- Identifies appropriate patient for NP coverage.
- Perform clinical tasks on the patient unit such as removal of chest tubes, sutures, and temporary pacing wires as directed by the CTS surgeons
- See patients in the pre and post op stage of care in the clinic as well as be responsible for inpatient consults and CTS patients in the stepdown and CTICU unit
- Responsible for transfer and discharge paperwork, discharge summary, and to communicate with cardiologist/PCP when appropriate
- Emphasis is on direct patient care, working in coordination with the staff surgeon, house staff, hospital staff, and the patient
- Participates in patient rounds and case conferences
- Works in collaboration with staff surgeon and house staff in educating the patients and their families in medical care
- Continually updates clinical knowledge and skills through consultation, formal and informal education, and review of literature for self
Job Requirements
Master’s degree in Nursing
Certification in Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
Active license in the state of NJ
BLS certification
1-2 Years’ experience in open heart surgery critical care preferred.
