Job Summary of the Lead MFM FE Sonographer

The Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) Lead Sonographer will coordinate services and activities specific to the established outreach areas and expanding areas in which s/he are assigned. The Lead MFM Sonographer monitors all technical and clerical functions, which include efficient patient throughput and effective utilization of equipment and human resources, based upon patient load. Maintains Performance Improvement and Quality Control activities. Follows all established Ultrasound and hospital policies and procedures. A MFM Sonographer is a diagnostic ultrasound professional who is qualified by professional credentialing, academic, and clinical experience to provide diagnostic patient care services using ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures. The scope of practice of the diagnostic medical sonographer includes those procedures, acts, and processes permitted by law, for which the individual has received education and clinical experience. This person must demonstrate competency and has completed the appropriate ARDMS certification OBGYN(s) which is the standard of practice in ultrasound. The Lead MFM Sonographer follows standards set forth by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM). Demonstrates anatomy for interpretation and/or intervention by, or at the request of a licensed practitioner. The Lead MFM Sonographer demonstrates knowledge of the human structure and functions, also principles of sound wave energy. Applies appropriate patient care and recognizes patient conditions essential for successful completion of the procedure. Exercises professional judgment in performance of services and maintains a demeanor complementary of medical ethics.

Participates in providing patient specific care standards as directed, and follows service excellence standards to ensure high levels of patient satisfaction. 

Responsibilities of the Lead MFM FE Sonographer
  • Lead and oversee the MFM Clinic Ultrasound Department to ensure the quality of work.
  • Contribute to the effective management of the MFM Clinic Ultrasound Department.
  • Demonstrate effective use of policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate effective problem solving and decision making skills; demonstrate effective organizational and critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrate effective time management skills including priority setting.
  • Demonstrate effective customer service skills.
  • Utilize effective team-building skills and collaboratively and effectively interacts with other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills for appropriately handling stressful or difficult situations.
  • Adhere to HCA/St. Davids HealthCares Patients First Initiatives up to and including Initial and Annual Code of Conduct, Mandatory Education, and Values Commitment/ICARE Standards.
  • Demonstrate expertise in providing patient care by identifying correct patient identification and that the requested procedure correlates with the patient's clinical history; utilizing appropriate interviewing and assessment skills to obtain relevant information.
  • Refer specific diagnostic, treatment or prognosis questions to the patient's physician.
  • Recognize sonographic characteristics of normal and abnormal tissues, structures, and blood flow; adjust scanning technique to optimize image quality and spectral waveform characteristics; analyze sonography findings throughout the course of the examination so that a comprehensive exam is completed and sufficient data is provided to the physician; performs measurements and calculations according to practice protocol ; strive to minimize patient exposure to acoustic energy without compromising examination quality and/or completeness.
  • Document clearly, concisely, and completely as well as documenting diagnostic and patient data in the appropriate record, according to established policy and procedure.
  • Record diagnostic images and data for use by the interpreting provider.
  • Work in partnership with the physician and other staff to provide the best care possible for all patients, maintaining an attitude of service and excellence.
  • Maintain knowledge in own field of expertise; participates in continuing education activities through professional societies and organizations to enhance knowledge, skills, and performance; shares knowledge with colleagues, students, and all members of the health care team.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications of the Lead MFM FE Sonographer

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A single two-year allied health education program that is patient-care related (Allied health occupations include, but are not limited to, diagnostic medical sonographer, radiologic technologist, respiratory therapist, occupational therapist, physical therapist and registered nurse.) OR Graduate of a program accredited by an agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), United States Department of Education (USDOE) or Canadian Medical Association (CMA), that specifically conducts programmatic accreditation for diagnostic medical sonography/diagnostic cardiac sonography/vascular technology. (Currently (as of 12/2013) the only organizations that offer programmatic accreditation under the aforementioned associations are the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and the Canadian Medical Association (CMA))
  • Associates Degree or higher in related technological field
  • Preferred: At least five (5) years of verifiable experience as an MFM Sonographer

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:

  • Credentials with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS)
  • Current certification with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) registered in OB.
  • Current Registry in Fetal Echocardiography (FE) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).
  • Fetal Nuchal Translucency or Nasal Bone Certification through the Fetal Medicine Foundation within one year of hire. Employee must provide proof of submission for consideration or renewal of NT or NB certification to department supervisor. If previously held certification lapses prior to renewal and submission completed in sufficient time for renewal, employee has three months post expiration to renew license; during this time employee is only allowed to scan applicable exams with a certified NT or NB preceptor.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
