Job Description:
This position within the New York (NY) State Weather Risk Communication Center (SWRCC) will serve to provide general meteorological services to critical state and other public sector stakeholders. Most NY agencies and authorities do not possess hired meteorologists, which makes the process of preparing for-, responding to-, and examining impactful weather events challenging. This position will work to fill this gap. As Lead Meteorologist (or "forecaster"), this position would serve as a focal point for coordination, supervising, and training of all meteorologist positions.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Examine available weather information relevant to NY and synthesize it into written reports (email, etc)
  • Manage virtual meeting spaces for stakeholders to ask weather-themed questions
  • Travel to the state EOC across from ETEC during rare, highly impactful weather, to provide in-person weather assistance such as weather briefings
  • Write summary reports of recent weather events
  • Respond (as able) to various weather queries from state stakeholders
  • Coordinate with other SWRCC employees, students, and interns on the development of new tools or communication strategies, as time permits
  • Create and supply weather datasets or graphics in response to specific inquiries, where possible
  • Develop prototype products or datasets according to the employee's skill level
  • Occasionally post on any SWRCC social media accounts
  • Serve as a stand-in SWRCC director when the SWRCC director is away
  • As Lead Meteorologist/forecaster, this position would also be responsible for:
    • Ongoing training of other forecasters and students/interns forecasting best practices, including where to find information, how to interpret meteorological data, and more
    • Ongoing training of other forecasters and students/interns on communication best practices, in conjunction with other communication specialist(s) at the SWRCC
    • Serve as a point of coordination between meteorologist/forecaster positions and analyst positions within SWRCC
    • Developing and managing shift schedules
    • Conducting performance reviews and evaluations for other meteorologists/forecasters
    • Facilitating coordination between other forecasters and product developer(s) and communication analyst(s) at the SWRCC

Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • BS/BA degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, or similar earth science from an accredited institution
  • Experience with National Weather Service products and weather forecasting principles
  • Previous experience in concisely synthesize weather forecasts into emails, briefings, or reports - occasionally in a time-sensitive manner
  • Microsoft product suite experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Good teamworking ability
  • Able to work competently on independent projects without signification supervision
  • Five years or more working as a weather forecaster

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience using NYS Mesonet data
  • Programming experience (Python, etc) and/or web development experience
  • Experience working with students/interns
  • Experience supervising employees
  • Experience developing shift schedules
  • Teaching or leading professional development activities

Professional Rank and Salary Range: Research Assistant 08, R3
Special Notes: For most work hours, this would be a typical office environment in either a conventional office or briefing room setting. Occasionally, when highly impactful weather occurs, work may entail relocating to the Emergency Operations Center at the state Office of Emergency Management, located directly across the street from ETEC. Expected common work week/day would be three consecutive 12-13 hour days from approximately 6AM-7PM.
