What You'll Do:

Traeger is seeking a Lead Product Design Engineer at our office in Kalamazoo, MI. In this role you will be responsible for managing and developing the innovation project portfolio. As part of this responsibility, the Lead Product Design Engineer will conceive, design, and prototype products through Traeger's NPD process. This role requires a high level of organization, creativity, attention to detail, and engineering knowledge to successfully launch innovative features and products consistently. You will be involved in collaborative activities as well as effectively communicating project progress and information with the wider team. The Lead Product Design engineer will be expected to both execute projects as well as manage small teams on a plurality of projects for all product categories. As a successful employee you will demonstrate effective technical and leadership skills to successfully launch world class product and further develop the product development department.  

How You Will Help Us Win:

  • Further develop Traeger's product development infrastructure to maintain and improve its world class product development.
  • Be a leader and manager of Traeger talent and ensure personal and professional development of those they are responsible for, either on-site or remote.
  • Communicate project and department status to the managers/directors and provide recommended next steps.
  • Coordinate with development team members on project roadblocks and key milestones to make empowered decisions or elevate as required.
  • Manage a portfolio of projects as part of the Traeger Strategic Blueprint and ensure projects are on time, on budget, and meet performance requirements.
  • Transfer consumer insights into consumer desired features and product specifications that provide the Product Management team an innovation pipeline that delivers a best-in-class consumer experience.
  • Manage outside suppliers to deliver prototypes on time and at costs that are aligned to business expectations.
  • Create robust3D CAD model parts and assemblies that communicate design intent, function, andmanufacturability.
  • Create and manage 2D engineering drawings that meet industry standards.
  • Perform engineering analysis on, but not limited to: mechanical statics and dynamics problems, mechanisms, FEA, CFD, concept selection, cost, and material selection.
  • Design and perform experimentation for early validation and verification of focused designs and full product concepts.
  • Provide design input for DFM and DFA during product development to ensure adherence to functional, aesthetic, and regulatory requirements.  
  • Work closely with tooling engineers and suppliers to ensure manufacturing feasibility and success.
  • Host brainstorms and other ideation activities as needed to drive innovative solutions.
  • Work wellwith Industrial Design and Product Management to understand the needs of the whole product team.
  • Support the Performance Team during product testing, both for development and V&V purposes. 

What You'll Need to Succeed:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in mechanical engineering. 
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in product design and development with proven success leading projects from concept thru mass-production.
  • Sound knowledge and application of engineering principles relevant to the work.
  • Extensive experience with CAD, drawing standards, and tolerance stack-up analysis.
  • Strong understanding of: NPD process, Design for Cost, Design for Manufacture, manufacturing processes, material selection, and prototyping methods.
  • History of thinking creatively to solve product problems (a portfolio is highly preferred).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the use of sketches and mock-ups.
  • Proven leadership experience, both leading project teams and mentoring individuals.
  • Strong problem-solving skills based in a disciplined and data-driven approach.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams (including international partners) and build strong working relationships.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 15% a must.
  • Experience doing light fabrication/prototyping using typical hand and power tools.
  • Ability to adapt to fast-paced environment with changing priorities and requirements.
