The schedule will be dependent on the position, one position will be Monday - Friday (9am-5:30pm).

Perform general janitorial duties related to the cleaning and upkeep of City buildings, facilities, and grounds; set up and remove tables, chairs, and equipment for meetings; ensure the security of facilities; and perform a variety of tasks relative to an assigned area of responsibility. The Lead Janitor is the lead worker responsible for organizing and overseeing the work activities of one or more crews.
Receives general supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises technical and functional direction over and provides training to lower-level classifications.
This is the journey-level in the Janitorial series that performs the most complex duties required to ensure that City infrastructure, systems, and facilities are maintained in a safe and effective working condition and provide the highest level of safety for public use. Responsibilities include performing a wide variety of tasks in the cleaning and upkeep of City buildings, facilities, and grounds. This class is distinguished from the Janitor classification in that the latter are entry-level classes that do not exercise technical and functional direction over lower-level classifications and do not perform the most complex duties assigned to the group. This class is distinguished from the Public Works Supervisor classifications in that it does not exercise formal authority in such areas as discipline, grievance resolution, employee evaluation, hiring, and promotion decisions.
Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The following tasks are representative and not to be considered all inclusive.
Lead Responsibilities
  • Responsible for ensuring all janitorial crew members stay on task and work at a consistent and adequate pace to meet expected level of service set by the Facility Supervisor.
  • Perform weekly inspections to assure level of service is being met.
  • Act as first point of contact for related requests or complaints.
  • Orders all needed supplies and janitorial products and assure adequate inventory is on hand.
  • Stock all janitorial storage areas and track inventory usage through the use of the City's asset management system.
  • Coordinate with crew members to address concerns or questions that need further input from Supervisor or Lead Technician.
  • Provide back-up coverage for meeting set-ups/tear downs. May need to act as additional labor for large meeting set-ups when needed. Coordinate with Supervisor to assign tasks to the worker position when applicable.
Janitorial Responsibilities
  • Perform general janitorial duties in cleaning and maintaining City buildings, facilities, and grounds; clean, sanitize, and maintain buildings, offices, and restroom facilities.
  • Sweep, scrub, mop, wax, and buff floors; vacuum and shampoo rugs and carpets; operate equipment such as floor buffers and vacuum cleaners.
  • Maintain, clean, and refinish a variety of floor surfaces, including carpet, wood, linoleum, and tile.
  • Clean and disinfect lavatories, toilets, and other plumbing fixtures; refill paper and other sanitary dispensers.
  • Wash and dust walls and doors; wash windows and window shades; replace burned out light bulbs.
  • Assist in the preparation of rooms and facilities for special events, activities and meetings; move, arrange and deliver set-up items and equipment as necessary.
  • Empty, clean, and sanitize waste containers; properly dispose recyclable materials; pick up and empty trash on facility grounds.
  • Operate janitorial equipment, materials and supplies in a safe and effective manner.
  • Perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance, including: painting, changing light bulbs, unclogging sinks, drains and toilets, replacing flush valves, door knobs, door stops, chair glides, and table legs.
  • Monitor inventory of janitorial materials and supplies; order materials and supplies as necessary.
  • Mix detergents or solvents according to specifications in containers to prepare cleaning solutions. Read and identify labels in order to select appropriate detergents and/or solvents for tasks. Label mixed materials appropriately.
  • Properly dispose of fluids, chemicals, equipment, and packaging.
  • Sweep and/or power wash sidewalks and parking areas.
  • Ice and snow mitigation during inclement weather.
  • Prepare and/or present reports, both oral and written, on building condition and needs. Notify immediate supervisor of any problems or concerns.
  • Responds to and records completed daily tasks in the City's asset management system.
  • Practice safe work habits and contribute to the safety of self, co-workers and the general public.
  • Responds to emergency situations as needed; may be called in to do so.
  • Complete other tasks as assigned.
Equipment Operation and Maintenance
  • Operate equipment necessary to maintain the cleanliness of facilities and grounds.
  • Perform routine inspection and maintenance necessary for the efficient and safe operation of the equipment (safety inspection, grease and oil, hydraulic systems, etc.).
  • Report problems and coordinate the repair of equipment with the Fleet Services Division personnel.
Department Organization
  • Communicate with other department employees to effectively and efficiently coordinate work program
  • Communicate with employees from other departments and agencies in order to coordinate and implement the work program
  • Communicate with members of the general public in order to coordinate work programs and provide appropriate information about the city activities
Public Interaction
  • Respond to questions from the public about City programs, facilities, and schedules
  • Provide direction to the public concerning safety issues related to the use of City facilities
  • Provide assistance in user conflict situations

Qualifications
Education & Experience:
  • One (1) year in aa position working in janitorial maintenance or related field.
  • Preferred: Experience operating a variety of specialized cleaning equipment, such as floor scrubbing machines, carpet shampooing equipment and high speed floor polishing equipment or other similar equipment; OR
  • Any combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job duties and responsibilities
Required Certifications/Licenses: Requires a valid driver license and the ability to maintain an acceptable driving record per City driving standards.
Must obtain within 60 days of starting work:
  • Blood Borne Pathogen Training
  • HAZMAT Awareness Level Training
  • CPR/First Aid and AED Certification

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of building and grounds maintenance and cleaning practices, equipment and supplies, safety hazards, and precautions.
  • Knowledge of the use, and potential hazards, of cleaning agents including solvents, disinfectants, detergents, and polishing agents.
  • Skilled in performing maintenance and custodial tasks without immediate supervision.
  • Skilled in making minor repairs and adjustments to building fixtures and equipment using appropriate small hand and power tools.
  • Skilled in active listening, giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions at a level sufficient to perform the essential functions.
  • Ability to exercise care in the use of cleaning materials and equipment for different types of surfaces and in the operation of a variety of janitorial equipment.
  • Ability to mix detergents or solvents according to specifications in containers to prepare cleaning solutions.

  • Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 50 lbs. without assistance; occasionally up to 100 lbs. with assistance from tools or a coworker.
