Position Overview
The Lead Data Systems Engineer will provide support and related services to the implementation of laboratory instruments and computers including data processing pipelines and management systems. The Lead Data Systems Engineer will perform end-to-end Systems Engineering support for instrument data flows from the perspective of data collection, move, formatting, mapping, storage, computation, and data basing.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the development of data strategy supporting business and organizational objectives.
  • Responsible for data management and analytics initiatives in line with organizational goals and expectations.
  • Perform data processing requirements analysis, and architect, design, develop, test, and administer data processing systems for collecting, storing, and analyzing data at scale.
  • Develop algorithms to validate, transform, map, and load data into data management systems.
  • Investigate complex database issues and provide solutions in a data processing system environment.
  • Prepare reports and technical documentation of data processing systems including ETL processes, data management, and reports/dashboards as applicable.
  • Implement and monitor data governance strategy in line with organizational policy and expectations, regulatory requirements (e.g., GxP, HIPAA, GDPR, FDA, data privacy), and standards (e.g., CDISC, ISO 8000).
  • Interface and collaborate with faculty, principal investigators, laboratory staff, system administrators, network engineers, software developers, other IS teams, and senior-level management.
  • Stay abreast with data technology trends, practices and advancements in the industry and incorporating gained knowledge into system planning and deployment.
  • Guide team members around data management and analytics systems and practices.
  • Identifying and resolving customer service issues and escalations, as well as implementing preventive and corrective actions.
  • Establishing and maintaining positive and professional relationships with customers, vendors, partners, and stakeholders.

Minimum Education and/or Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, information science, business, or related field required.
  • Master's degree preferred.

Minimum Experience:

  • Minimum requirement: 5+ progressive years of IT experience including strong database design, data architecture and data transform processes.
  • Industry experience in data acquisition, processing control systems and instrumentation is desirable.
  • Experience in data architecture and design.
  • Some experience with data governance including implementation of a data governance framework.
  • Experience with leading industrial tools for data lake, big data, or ETL.
  • Experience with enterprise reporting tools for development of reports as applicable.
  • Experience creating dashboards using data visualization tools (e.g. PBI, Tableau, Qlik, and data warehousing applications) and source control systems (e.g., Epic, Workday) as applicable.
  • Some experience and knowledge in Master Data Management and Data Dictionary Standards.
  • Some experience with regulatory requirements and standards as applicable.
  • Experience providing technical guidance and mentorship within Data Engineering.
  • Proven performance in earlier role/comparable role.

Certifications:

  • Prefer a relevant certification, such as PMP, ITIL, ITSM, DBMS, and Linux / Windows OS related certification.

Special Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Strong software and Systems Engineering expertise including database administration skills in the installation, configuration, performance optimization, replication, and security management of database systems.
  • Proficiency in backup and recovery of database systems with experience in PostgreSQL and MS SQL.
  • Strong knowledge and skills in data modeling and proficiency in writing database objects such as stored procedures, views, and triggers.
  • Strong knowledge and skills in ETL processes and experience in using ETL tools like SSIS, SSAS and/or other alternatives.
  • Strong knowledge and skills in implementing data processing pipelines and data integration tools like Pentaho and Apache HOP.
  • Strong understanding and familiarity with Linux and Windows-based computer systems.
  • Proficient knowledge and skills in networking computers in a data processing systems environment.
  • Broad range of knowledge including information technology, requirements / technical architecture analysis (e.g., understanding data flow diagrams, architectural diagrams, etc.).
  • Maintaining awareness of commercial and community (open source) data standards and standardization activities.
  • Ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical staff and users, as well as external partners and stakeholders.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; the ability to share technical results and recommendations with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to perform systems capacity planning, updates, and migration of hardware and software to enhance computing capabilities and performance.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging IT technologies and best practices, especially those related to lab computer and data processing systems.
  • Ability to analyze data and make data-driven decisions.
  • Ability to plan, design, implement, and maintain complex and dynamic IT systems and solutions.

Compensation

In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $94,640 - $169,520 per year for the role of Lead Data Systems Engineer.
