Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads - both students and employers - for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC's institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
This position has been designated an essential position. The employee filling this position maybe required to report to work or otherwise fulfill the responsibilities of the position in the event of a college/campus closure due to weather or other emergency conditions.
Lead Custodian provides a full range of custodial/ housekeeping services for college facilities to include, but not limited to, trash removal, vacuuming, mopping, dusting, sweeping, floor stripping and waxing, carpet cleaning, window cleaning, black/white-board cleaning, etc. Provides room set-up/take-down assistance and light bulb replacement as assigned. Assign duties, inspect work, and investigate complaints regarding housekeeping service and equipment and take corrective action. Take periodic inventories, train new employees, and refer discipline issues to manager. Maintain and demonstrate good attendance habits. Report any problems, maintenance issues with buildings, or broken equipment to manager. Performs other cleaning tasks as assigned.
This position is not being hired for any specific building, and it may be moved to any building on the campus. This job assignment may include weekends.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of janitorial, custodial, and housekeeping services, and sanitizing techniques.
  • Ability to climb a ladder without assistance.
  • Knowledge of custodial operations and industry standards.
  • Ability to lift objects not more than 50 lbs. without assistance.
  • Uses appropriate equipment and supplies
  • Experience overseeing a custodial operation as a shift supervisor.

Additional Considerations
  • Experience in carpet and floor care, experience operating buffers, and auto scrubbers.
  • Ability to write and assign work orders, using computerized work order management software.
