WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
Prototyping of footwear concepts is crucial to product creation and decision-making at Nike! We do everything from incubating new designs and technologies to producing one-of-a-kind products for Nike's most high-profile athletes and influencers. Our team is a vital component in crafting the future of Footwear. The Bowerman Footwear Lab's Concept Engineering team is a crucial player that enables innovation and speed throughout Nike's Footwear teams. A Concept Engineer (sometimes referred to as a Pattern Engineer) is a person able to translate a design concept (given in 2D or 3D) into a fully engineered set of 2D patterns that can be assembled into a physical shoe. They need to balance design lines, material selection, and construction methods to create a shoe that not only looks like design intended but will fit and function properly. We are looking for someone who can blend an artistic eye for design with a technical engineering approach and an ability to create footwear prototypes physically. The role of Lead Concept Engineer will bring their advanced knowledge of footwear and Pattern Engineering to work on technically difficult projects, serve as a teacher and mentor to others, and to help shape the future of Pattern Engineering and prototype creation at Nike.

  • Review and scrutinize all footwear prototypes for execution of key design details, quality of construction, and manufacturability.
  • Provide advanced technical training and help to build new training curriculums. Provide ongoing mentoring and coaching to less senior Concept Engineers.
  • Able to construct a plan and lead others in the testing and evaluation of new digital tools that increase prototyping speed, accuracy to design, and downstream communication.
  • Proficient at leading large, cross-functional projects.

WHO WILL YOU WORK WITH?
  • Collaborate with project requestors from across Nike's design, inline footwear development, and innovation teams to understand the request and define the technical direction of the project.
  • Partner with Bowerman Footwear Lab teammates on the execution of footwear prototype construction.
  • Work together with other Concept Engineers (both on campus and in our manufacturing locations) to help ensure Pattern Engineering standard processes are current and clear.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING?
  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design, Apparel Design, Engineering or similar Technical Degree, or 4 additional years of work experience in related field in lieu of degree

  • Intermediate tooling and chemical footwear knowledge
  • Proficient operating stitching and other footwear manufacturing machines.
  • Advanced ability to interpret technical drawings and sketches. Strong visualization skills to translate between 2D and 3D.
  • Ability to drive cost effective solutions with a focus on quality crafting techniques
  • Proficient at managing complex, technical projects and explaining technical concepts in an easily understandable way.
