Position Summary

As a Law Librarian, you will have the opportunity to work in a role that allows you to make a meaningful impact for both individuals and the community by helping to create, organize, and provide a comprehensive set of resources to help people understand the law, their rights, the legal process, and how to become better advocates for themselves. The position is a great opportunity to bridge the transition between technical library skills and library administration. You will be instrumental in supporting our current efforts which include reorganizing the law library’s existing collection; auditing the collection records in the law library’s electronic catalog system (KOHA); re-defining our collection goals to better support the legal needs of the community; expanding on digital accessibility; and assisting with developing and implementing internal library policies.

They are necessary to support the legal education and research needs of Pierce County’s judges, government officials, lawyers, and residents. How to be Successful in the Role:
As the law Librarian you will utilize your sense of organization daily, and balance the need for consistent and logical organization with adaptability. To succeed in this role, you will need a sharp eye for detail and a craftsmanship approach to your work product (measure twice, cut once mentality). You will regularly interact with attorneys, legal staff, and the general public to answer questions at the refence desk, so this position requires someone who is patient and has a composed temperament. Your good independent judgment in determining priorities will be critical as you support the work of the Law Library.
Your Future in this Role:
This role will offer you the ability to continuously learn, grow, and make recommendations for the law library’s improvement. It will also offer you the ability to observe, participate, and develop skills in library administration.
Core Daily Responsibilities:
Administrative:


  • Manages acquisitions, serials, returns, and cancellations of collection materials and subscriptions
  • Assists with budgeting, financial planning, and reporting
  • Verifies receipt of materials and process invoices for payment using Workday
  • Assists with the development and implementation of the collection development policy
  • Performs daily cash register reconciliation
Collection:
  • Catalogs materials using the Library of Congress classification system:
  • Maintains the collection by processing library materials, shelving new materials, Shifting collection as needed
  • Orders new and replacement collection materials

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


  • An M.L.S. degree OR a J.D. degree.
  • An applicant with an M.L.S. degree (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited library school should have either:
    • 1 year of law library experience; OR
    • 1 year of library experience and 1 year of legal research experience
  • An applicant with a J.D. degree should have at least 2 years of library experience (with at least 1 year of experience at a law library).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • At least two years of professional law library experience
  • J.D. degree in addition to an M.L.S. degree
  • Working knowledge of Workday
