Under general supervision of the Parks Manager, participates in and directs seasonal park staff and/or volunteers in the care and maintenance of park grounds, trails, buildings, and equipment and participates in LAW ENFORCEMENT activities. Assists the Conservation Park Ranger in overall park/natural resource management including park maintenance, wildlife protection, pollution control, and habitat restoration.
Illustrative Examples of Work
  1. Participates in, plans, and coordinates the maintenance, repair, and care of park grounds, facilities, and equipment of Conservation managed lands., including recreation areas, buildings, campgrounds, tables, fireplaces, docks, roads, wildlife exhibits, trails, shelters, fences, waterways, and related facilities.
  2. Assists in various natural resources activities including maintenance of wildlife habitat, prairies/wetland restorations, shoreline maintenance, fish propagation, water management, vegetation control, and removal of invasive plant species.
  3. Performs maintenance, repair work in compliance with specifications and schedules.
  4. Monitors and evaluates facilities and premises to ensure they are safe and well maintained; identifies required maintenance and repair projects and safety hazards; takes immediate corrective action to eliminate hazards.
  5. Oversees and participates in, the routine care and maintenance of equipment used in the park including tractors, mowers, and chainsaws; inspects boats in the area as required.
  6. Prepares and maintains records and reports including preventative maintenance records, daily work order activity, and equipment and supply inventories.
  7. Patrols park areas enforcing laws and regulations pertaining to the operation of county parks; issues summons, and may assist in the arrest of persons abusing facilities or violating state, federal, or local laws and regulations. Keeps the Conservation Park Ranger apprised of activities.
  8. Responds to situations, including emergencies, involving public safety/protection of public property; administers first aid/CPR as necessary.
  9. Answers questions and provides information to the public on park services; informs the public and employees of park rules and ensures compliance; assists with campsite registration; implements various park public relations.
  10. Collects fees from users of park facilities; maintains accurate accounting records of revenue; maintains records of park activities and operations.
  11. Performs related duties as may be required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • General knowledge of the principles and practices of park and natural resource management.
  • Knowledge of the standard practices used in the building maintenance trades.
  • Knowledge of standard practices used in landscaping and grounds keeping.
  • Knowledge of state, federal, and local laws and regulations pertaining to park operations and natural resources.
  • Knowledge of proper safety procedures and occupational hazards associated with maintenance and repair of buildings/grounds.
  • Ability to prepare time, material, and cost estimates.
  • Ability to inspect buildings, premises, and other facilities to determine appropriate maintenance and repair requirements.
  • Ability to tactfully enforce park rules and regulations and resolve disputes and conflicts with diplomacy and persuasion.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain equipment and power tools including tractors, boats/motors, mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, chippers, sanders, trucks.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, representatives of other organizations, volunteers, and the general public.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor such as moving picnic tables, construction activities, and forestry related work in rough or uneven terrain under any type of weather condition.
  • Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds as required.

Training and Experience
  • Graduation from high school, or equivalent, and
  • Two years' experience involving facilities maintenance including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, welding or in horticulture, park management, or natural resources, or
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience that will have provided the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Iowa Law Enforcement Academy Certification is preferred.
