Job Summary

The Law Clerk II provides direct provide direct assistance to a federal client in addressing civil pandemic-related health care fraud and/or opioid-related matters. This position will provide support for civil cases and investigations concerning these areas. Pandemic-related health care fraud matters may concern: the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Uninsured Program and other HRSA-funded programs, COVID test kits, the Provider Relief Fund, Medicare COVID waivers, nursing homes, and other comparable matters. Opioid-related matters may include the Controlled Substances Act and False Claims Act matters.

Compensation:

Chloeta reserves the right to offer any candidate above or below the listed compensation amount based on experience or business needs.

  • $25-$45 Hourly Range

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Performs legal research and drafting legal memoranda, motions, and briefs
  • Drafts investigatory subpoenas and discovery requests
  • Reviews and analyzes documents and information obtained during investigations or turned over during litigation discovery, and assists clients in presentations, meetings, depositions, interviews, and court proceedings
  • Assists in the preparation for and participates in witness interviews and depositions
  • Analyzes documents and information to identify violations of the Controlled Substances Act and/or the False Claims Act and avenues for enforcement of such violations
  • Presents findings and recommendations to clients and participates in strategy meetings
  • Works collaboratively with clients and legal support staff
  • Works under the direction of a Supervisory Paralegal or Project Manager performing complex legal research; preparing draft legal documents, such as motions, briefs, memoranda of law, etc.; reviewing documents for relevance and privilege; and assisting attorneys with all phases of litigation. Acts independently and/or as a team leader on larger projects. Responsibilities may include acting as primary interface with trial attorneys, experts, and other client staff.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Must have hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, and imaging.
  • Requires excellent written and oral communication skills and thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw.
  • Role also requires hands-on familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources.
  • Requires sound working knowledge of federal and state court systems, legal research procedures, and legal research resources.

Education and Experience

  • Required: U.S. Citizenship
  • Required: J.D. degree, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least two years of study or, an equivalent level of legal training or experience; or an equivalent level of education may be substituted
  • Required: Two (2) years of progressively more responsible experience on litigation support projects or task order related projects including proven capabilities and communication skills to successfully interact with clients and attorneys
  • Preferred: Experience with civil litigation, especially if such experience involves complex federal cases and jury trials

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, etc.
