Job Description Summary

This is a manager level position requiring extensive laundry production experience that will be responsible for overseeing a complete laundry facility handling linen laundering for hotel guest rooms, food & beverage operations, pool towel and contract services. This role has responsibility for ensuring safe and efficient daily operations of laundering equipment by a team of 25+ team members. Responsible for assigning & reviewing the work of laundry employees engaged in receiving, washing, ironing, packing & delivering laundry to various clients, departments, or guests. Candidate will also be responsible for accurate reporting of the department productivity and financial accounting using excel, word and any other reporting tools with timely completion of work assignments at a high level of productivity while maintaining high positivity in a fast-paced work environment.

Job Description

Work Environment:

  • Must be able work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Office work environment.
  • On-site hotel laundry facility, production floor with varying temperatures of high heat and low cold conditions.
  • Back of the house locations.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to reach overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, pulling, and stooping. Stand, sit, or walk for an extended period. Ability to move over sloping, uneven, or slippery surfaces. Ability to move up and down ladders, stairs, and service ramps.
  • Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Ability to stand during entire shift.

Expected Hours of Work:

  • Must be flexible to work variable days of the week to include weekends and holidays.
  • Must be flexible to work various shifts (days, nights, overnights).
  • Ten-to-twelve-hour shifts are sometimes required.

Travel:

  • Maybe required to travel.

Principle duties and responsibilities (Essential Functions) include:

  • Have a strong understanding of the commercial laundry equipment including but not limited to, washers, dryers, sheet folders, conveyor belts. Ironers, and overhead transportation conveyors.
  • Supervise the timely pickup, cleaning, pressing, and delivery of hotel linen and uniforms, and guest clothing to meet business plan goals and objectives.
  • Maintain adequate supply of clean linen for guest rooms and F&B outlets by monitoring inventory levels, anticipating demands, controlling production, and maintaining necessary chemicals and supplies.
  • Supervise and support staff engaged in cleaning, pressing and delivery activities.
  • Ensure knowledge of washroom formulas for clothing and linens and all types of chemicals used in washers.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of infection control.
  • Receive, investigate and follow-up on all customer complaints.
  • Inspect facilities and equipment to ensure operating conditions are at acceptable levels.
  • Hold pre-shift meetings to ensure that the laundry team is aware of the day’s tasks, safety of the day and any other miscellaneous information to ensure successful operations.
  • Set goals and measurable objectives for the department to measure success and establish accountability standards.
  • Provide direct management and strategy to linen and laundry services.
  • Keep accurate records of production for billing outside accounts.
  • Responsible for maintaining & purchasing of department hotel uniforms.
  • Responsible for keeping accurate records, stocking, and purchasing adequate levels of hotel pool towel as well as hotel uniforms by maintaining distribution.
  • Responsible for overseeing the purchase and maintenance of laundry machines.
  • Responsible for making knowledgeable recommendations for laundry equipment replacements.
  • Responsible for utilizing historical and forecasted data to drive efficient laundering operations and maximize opportunities for cost savings or productivity improvements.
  • Participate in the accountability of accounting and budgeting of the laundry operation and possess skills to forecast variances in advance when possible. Additionally, a capital plan must be maintained to protect future expenditure in compliance with hotel standards.
  • Responsible for overseeing and facilitating equipment training ensuring all team members meet Sonesta’s standards for safety, enforcing the safety requirements for the priority of the position.
  • Responsible for ensuring competitive cost per pound metrics are achieved while ensuring fill rates and delivery quotas are met daily.
  • Ability to deliver high quality customer service and respond to customer needs.
  • Will be required to hit deadlines and complete job tasks as set by leadership without direct monitoring or oversight. Ability to anticipate work needs and interact professionally to extend customer service with a professional and pleasant personality.
  • Responsible for interviewing potential candidates to join the team in various positions through the laundry department. Position will have primary oversight of hiring, disciplining, promoting, demoting and other responsibilities in coordination with appropriate company policies and procedures.
  • This is a working manager position that will require active engagement alongside laundry production team members as needed to fulfill meeting daily quotas.
  • Identifying the developmental needs of others and coaching, mentoring, or otherwise helping others to improve their knowledge or skills.
  • Supervise staffing levels to ensure that operational needs and financial objectives are met.
  • Solicits employee feedback, utilizes and “open door” policy and reviews employee satisfaction results to identify and address employee problems or concerns.
  • Ability to perform work without direct supervision and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ensures hotel polices are administered fairly and consistently, disciplinary procedures and documentation are completed according to Standard and Local Operating Procedures (SOPs and LSOPs).
  • Ensure and celebrate successes and publicly recognizes the contributions of team members; ensures employee recognition is taking place on all shifts.
  • Manages the employee performance appraisal process.
  • Ensure uniform and personal appearance are clean and professional.
  • Display daily professional, courteous, attentive, helpful, and positive attitude towards all guests, fellow employees, and managers.
  • Ability to work cohesively with co-workers as part of a team to reach common goals.
  • Ability to follow Sonesta’s policies and procedures according to company guidelines.
  • Maintain confidentiality of proprietary information; protect company assets.
  • Understanding Sonesta’s company and safety policies and maintain compliance with OSHA and the health department requirements.

Education and Experience:

  • Highschool diploma or GED required.
  • (5) Five years’ experience in commercial or institutional laundry operations and equipment such as washers, dryers, extractors, tumblers, presses, hand or flat work irons.
  • (6) six months’ experience in quality control & record keeping.
  • (2) years of experience in staff supervision and management which includes planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others.
  • Knowledge of chemistry and basic math to understand wash formulas, stain removals and spotting.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Valid Driver’s License preferred.
  • Ability to proactively communicate and work effectively with hotel staff, corporate, and hotel customers.
  • Reading and writing abilities to understand departmental correspondences and complete all required departmental documents.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, related computer software programs, and any required laundry systems preferred.
  • Ensure overall guest satisfaction.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local laws governing equal employment opportunity and civil rights, occupational safety and health, wage and hour issues, and Innkeeper laws.

Additional Job Information/Anticipated

Pay Range

$71,000-$80,000- Base pay offered may vary depending on various factors including but not limited to job related knowledge, skills, and job specific/overall experience.
