Job Title: Latin Teacher

Reports To: World Languages Department Head

Position Summary:

Vermont Academy seeks a teacher who is passionate about teaching Latin at multiple levels. Teaching with an immersion-style approach, the teachers in the department aim for appropriate levels of proficiency each year by using multiple and varied media and activities to engage students in the process of learning another language. The department also embraces the philosophy of backward design which asks teachers to set year-end goals for each level and use excellent planning and organization to help students attain these goals. Finally, the World Language Department is fully committed to teaching another language and culture so that students can become more culturally competent and more aware of issues related to social justice.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

• Teach a few sections of Latin and possibly French or Spanish
• Potential to serve as department chair: supporting/mentoring colleagues, running department meetings, assisting in the hiring process, developing curriculum
• Coach or supervise an activity during two seasons (priority given to those with experience with hockey, nordic, soccer and/or crew).
• Live as a dorm parent in Academy housing with weekday and monthly weekend duty as well as an academic advisor.
• Salary is based on degrees, experience, and the contributions the candidate can make to the school.

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Languages; Advanced degree preferred
• 3-5 years of previous experience preferred languages at multiple levels. Teaching with an immersion-style approach, the teachers in the department aim for appropriate levels of proficiency each year by using multiple and varied activities to engage students in the process of learning.
• Outstanding organizational skills
