Description
SUMMARY:
This is a union position under the direct supervision of a Fire Lieutenant and the general guidance of the Fire Chief. This position performs the full range of duties of a fire fighter.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Incumbent performs a complete range of firefighting activities including engaging directly in firefighting, various rescue operations, fire prevention, and public education. • Must maintain, clean, and operate all fire department equipment, tools and apparatus to protect life and property. Must deliver emergency medical services to the highest level that is determined by the City. Perform routine inspections, testing, cleaning and maintenance of equipment, apparatus, and facilities. • Work is performed under the direction of a commanding officer in accordance with specified policies, procedures and practices set forth by the Fire Department and often performed under unpleasant, stressful and/or hazardous conditions. • In addition to emergency response duties, fire fighters will spend substantial amounts of time engaging in supervised firefighting, medical, rescue and other applicable training. • Perform community education, public relation events and community service.
These duties are not inclusive of all duties, and as such, this position may perform other duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
• High school diploma or GED, Washington State EMT certification (or certification with WA reciprocity from other states) • Must be an IFSAC certified Fire Fighter Level 1. One year career firefighter experience or two year of part-time firefighter/volunteer experience within the last 36 months.
Special Requirements: •
Must be 21 years of age at time of application. • Must not have any adult felony convictions. • Must have the ability to read and write the English language. • Must successfully pass a background investigation, medical examination to include a drug screen and a psychological evaluation. Valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) certificate. Certificate must be dated no later than one year from the date of application.
Licensing and Certification: •
Valid Washington State Driver's License with driving record free of serious or frequent violations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: •
Knowledge of fire suppression and prevention principles and practices. • Knowledge of fire prevention laws, ordinances, and codes. • Record-keeping techniques, computer skills, oral and written communication skills. • Leadership and interpersonal skills using tact, patience, respect, and courtesy. Knowledge of principles for training and providing work direction. • Knowledge of safety laws and regulations, with the ability to practice sound job safety practices and procedures, which will minimize-municipal liability. • Must maintain valid Washington State EMT certification (or valid NREMT). • Must be able to operate assigned equipment required to perform specific tasks. • Must have IFSAC Firefighter Level 1 (or equivalent)
Must have IFSAC HAZMAT Operations or equivalent.
Ability to read, interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports. • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, other agencies, and the general public. • Ability to maintain composure in emergency and stressful situations. • Ability to work within established guidelines independently with little or no supervision. • Must have a high degree of sound independent judgment. • Ability to meet departmental physical standards. Tools and Equipment Used: • Emergency medical equipment, fire apparatus, fire pumps, hoses, ladders, and other standard firefighting equipment, radio, pager, personal computer, phone, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Various types of public education props and materials. Various types of audio/visual equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position. Work is performed primarily in station, vehicles, and outdoor settings, in all weather conditions, including temperature extremes, during day and night times. Work is often performed in emergency and stressful situations. Individual is exposed to hearing alarms and hazards associated with fighting fires and rendering emergency medical assistance, including smoke & fume inhalation, noxious odors, chemicals, liquid chemicals, solvents, and oils. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting or EMT emergency scene activities when noise may be loud. May work with people with unknown medical problems, with exposure to contagious diseases and blood. May work with hostile or abusive individuals.
