Job description

This posting is open to current, regular (non-probationary), full-time employees of the Louisville Metro Police Department.
The purpose of this position is to classify, compare, and file fingerprint facsimiles of deceased persons and LMPD employment applicants and operates computerized fingerprint comparison equipment to identify individuals. Perform suspect comparison, elimination comparisons and automated fingerprint identification system searches to latent prints or impressions of finger, palm, toe and foot prints.
  • Testifies in court when subpoenaed to explain fingerprint comparison evaluation processes, procedures, and regulations.
  • Performs suspect comparison, elimination comparisons and automated fingerprint identification system searches to latent prints or impressions.
  • Operates a camera to photograph Latent Fingerprint evidence.
  • Maintains database records and filing system of fingerprint cards.
  • Assists law enforcement officers in criminal investigations by conducting file searches and fingerprint comparisons.
  • Evaluates latent evidence to determine if it contains sufficient detail for comparison and quality to determine if the print is a fingerprint, palm print or an impression
  • Prepares latent print documentation case report detailing evaluation process, findings and conclusions, including photographic enlargements of latent prints and suspect fingerprint card charting.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

  • Applicant must be a current, regular (non-probationary), full-time employee of the Louisville Metro Police Department.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biological Laboratory Science, Biology, Criminology, Forensic Science or related discipline.
  • One (1) year of experience in the forensic science of fingerprint comparison, lab development of Latent Fingerprint evidence or field development of Latent Fingerprint evidence or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Special Certifications & Licenses:
  • Certificates in Basic Fingerprint Classification and Basic Latent Fingerprinting from Kentucky Department of Justice Bureau of Training, FBI Academy or an accredited fingerprint school.
Other Minimum Requirements:
  • Applicants who have bought, sold, or used marijuana within one year of application, or have bought, sold or used any controlled substance or narcotic drug without a prescription within six years of application will be disqualified.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony or have any criminal action pending against them.
  • Misdemeanor convictions will be considered on an individual basis.
  • Must submit to a pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must submit to a pre-employment polygraph test.
  • Must wear personal protective equipment as mandated by OSHA.
  • Must be vaccinated for hepatitis B, have provided evidence of immunity, or have signed a declination form within ten days of initial assignment.
  • Must be on 24-hour call.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
  • Must submit to fingerprinting for criminal history check.

Physical Demands:
  • Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
Unavoidable Hazards:
  • Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
    • Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
    • Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
    • Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.
    • Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.
    • Traffic; Moving machinery.
    • Electrical shock; Heights.
