Job description

Summary

The Language Access Coordinator is responsible for the coordination of language services and the provision of interpreting for Allegheny County's Department of Human Services as part of the Immigrants and Internationals Initiative.The position is within the Language Access unit and plays a key role in the mission of the Equity and Inclusion department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Process interpreting requests received via email or phone from program offices, support offices, and authorized providers that need Language Access assistance.
  • Coordinate with multiple language service providers to assign interpreters.
  • Organize the interpreting requests and make the necessary phone or email follow-ups with staff and LSPs.
  • Cover interpretating assignments throughout DHS (OSI, OPI, or VRI) when needed.
  • Verify invoices for all interpreting assignments completed.
  • Track and collect language services usage data for the monthly and quarterly Language Access reports.
  • Assist with the coordination of interpreting for DHS-sponsored remote or in-person events.
  • Assist with the development, coordination, and/or the delivery of Language Access training for staff and providers.
  • Assist with creating and updating glossaries specific to DHS and each Program Office.
  • Serve as a resource to assist staff regarding cross-cultural issues and dynamics to ensure mutual understanding and respect between staff and clients.
  • Support the Immigrants and Internationals Advisory Council's efforts around the promotion of equitable Language Access practices within human services.
  • Represent DHS in the national, state, city, and local Language Access committees.
  • Support and participate in the internal and external monitoring of language services.
  • Maintain regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.
  • Perform related tasks consistent with job duties and assignments.

From time to time, the employee will be asked to perform additional mission-related tasks and duties as required by the employer.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Standard English and one of the other top languages requested by DHS clients including: Spanish, Nepali, Arabic, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, and/or ASL is required.
  • LEP and immigrant communities and organization in Allegheny County is a plus.
  • Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams etc.)
  • CAT tools is a plus.

Ability to:

  • Analyze problems, synthesize information, and implement plans and procedures.
  • Evaluate and report on needs and resources.
  • Accurately interpret during in-person, OPI, or VRI assignments.
  • Plan, prioritize, and organize the daily workflow.
  • Multitask and work with minimum supervision.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
  • Be a team player.

Education, Experience, and Training:

  • Any combination of education, experience, and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities will be considered.
  • Interpreting experience is required.
  • Current or previous work in the human services field is desired.
  • Official translator/interpreter certification is desired.
  • Experience in designing educational or training material and/or delivering training is a plus.
